“You have to let me explain,” Kyle pleaded, his voice trembling as he glanced over his shoulder. I stood at the door, my heart racing. Was I really about to invite this man in? The memory of his smug grin lingered like a bad taste in my mouth.
“Explain quickly, Kyle. I don’t have all day,” I snapped, stepping aside just enough for him to slip through. The door clicked shut, and I could feel the tension filling the space. “Why are you here?”
“It’s not what you think. It’s not just a scam,” he stammered, running a hand through his disheveled hair. “Tony, the guy you saw in your garden… he’s part of something bigger. A crime syndicate that targets seniors.”
My stomach dropped at the word "syndicate." “What do you mean? Targeted how?” I pressed, my mind racing with the implications.
“They’ve been watching you. They know your routine, your life. All because of me,” Kyle confessed, his eyes wide with fear. “I was forced to scam you… I didn’t want to!”
Just then, a loud revving sound shattered the silence. I turned towards the window, my pulse quickening as I saw a car screech to a halt outside. “What’s happening?” I asked, panic creeping into my voice.
“They’re here! They’re coming for you!” Kyle shouted, scrambling toward the window as several men climbed out of the car, their intentions clear. I felt frozen in place, dread wrapping around me like a heavy blanket.

The men outside moved with purpose, scanning the area like predators hunting their prey. I gripped the edge of the kitchen counter, feeling the reality of the moment crash over me.
“Kyle, what do we do?” I whispered, my voice barely audible. My mind reeled, my instincts screaming to run, but my legs felt anchored to the ground.
“They want what’s yours. But I can help you! You don’t understand,” he said urgently, his eyes darting nervously. “You need to know about your late husband.”
“What do you mean?” I snapped, folding my arms defensively. “He’s gone!”
“He was involved with them, part of the syndicate. That’s why they’re after you now,” Kyle said, desperation etched on his face. “You’re a target because of his past.”
“No, that can’t be true!” I felt the walls closing in, my breath coming in shallow gasps. But something inside me twisted, realizing how little I knew about the man I married.
“He left you something, a hidden cache of money,” Kyle continued, his voice dropping to a whisper. “It could either save you or put you in their crosshairs.”
“Where?” My heart raced as I absorbed the gravity of his words. This shocking truth twisted the knife deeper. I could either be the prey or the one with power, but I had to make a choice quickly.
The men outside were getting closer, their laughter chilling me to the bone. I felt my pulse quicken again. How was this my life? The calm I had built was teetering on the edge, and I had no idea how it would all unravel.
