Section 4

The party was in full swing: kids ran wild, balloons bobbed above the laughter, and music blared from the speakers. Yet, amidst the chaos, Natalie felt like a ghost, disconnected and desperate to hold onto news about Meline. She clutched her phone like a lifeline, willing it to ring.

As she searched for a quiet corner, her eyes caught Celeste joking with her friends, amusement lighting up her face. “Can you believe Meline might actually miss my party? That’s such a tragedy!”

Nataly's throat tightened. How could her sister be so callous?

"That's not funny, Celeste!"

She blurted, anger bubbling over. “Meline is in serious condition!”

The room fell silent. Celeste’s smile faltered. “Come on, lighten up. It’s just a joke.”

But Natalie couldn't. “It's not just a joke! It’s my daughter!”

"You're overreacting,"

her mother chimed in, a look of disdain crossing her face. “Focus on the party. She’ll be fine.”

Her heart felt heavy, the weight of betrayal pressing down. Just as she turned to escape the scene, her phone vibrated again. Thrumming with urgency, she hesitated before answering.

"Natalie, it's the hospital. We need you to come back. It’s Meline."

The world shifted under her feet. “What happened?”

"Her condition has worsened."

In a moment of brewing tension at the birthday party, Natalie felt her breath catch. The laughter and music faded away as panic surged within her. Without another word, she dashed for the door, her heart pounding with every step as fear gripped her.

Desperate Dash to the Hospital

Natalie's heart raced as she swerved onto the hospital grounds, tires screeching against the pavement. She could still hear the laughter from Celeste's party echoing in her mind, mingling with the guilt that clung to her like a heavy cloak. She fumbled with her phone, almost dropping it as she desperately dialed the ICU. “Please, just give me news,” she pleaded when the nurse answered. “Please wait,” the nurse said, her voice laced with an unfamiliar urgency. As she rushed through the hospital doors, her breath quickened. The antiseptic smell stung her nose, reminding her of everything that was wrong. “Meline,” she whispered, hurrying toward the nurse’s station. “I need to see her.” A doctor approached, his brow furrowed. “Ms. Turner?” “Yes! How is Meline?” His gaze fell, a wave of sorrow washing over him. “I need to speak with you. She has suffered a severe setback. We’re very concerned.” Natalie’s stomach dropped, dread pooling within her. “What do you mean? What happened?” “Her injuries have worsened. We’re conducting a full review,” he said, his voice dropping to nearly a whisper. “There’s been a suggestion of foul play.” Her breath hitched in her throat. “Foul play? What are you talking about?” The doctor exchanged a glance with the nurse, who looked equally grim. “We found inconsistencies. Bruises that don’t align with the accident. We’re opening an investigation.” “An investigation?” The word felt foreign on her tongue, a cruel twist of fate. “Into who? Why?” “I can’t reveal too much at this moment, but it’s protocol. We need to know if this was truly an accident, or if someone else is involved.” “I have to see her.” “Please, calm down. We’re doing everything we can.” “Calm down?” she spat. “My daughter could be in danger, and you want me to calm down?” The doctor’s expression softened. “We’ll keep you updated. You need to keep your phone on.” Natalie staggered back, trying to wrap her mind around the implications. “My daughter… someone could be hurting her?” She staggered against the wall, her world collapsing around her. The laughter of her family from hours earlier now felt like a sinister echo.

Unraveling the Truth

Sitting in the stark hospital room, Natalie felt her body grow numb. The seconds ticked by painfully. The bright lights illuminated Meline’s small form, but all Natalie could think of was the finality of the doctor’s words. Foul play. A knot twisted in her chest. Her mind raced back to the moments in the kitchen, her mother’s dismissive comments, her father’s harsh words. Could they have known? “No,” she whispered to herself. “They wouldn’t…” But the heaviness of doubt lingered. “My family,” she thought, the betrayal creating a hollow ache within. “Mommy?” Meline’s small voice broke through the fog. Natalie rushed to her side, taking her daughter’s hand. “I’m here, sweetheart. I’m right here.” Meline squinted up at her. “I was scared. I thought Grandma said you didn’t care.” Natalie sucked in a breath. “She didn’t mean it, baby.” The room around her faded as memories flickered through her mind, each one like a knife. The arguments. The lies. The doctor returned, snapping her back to the present. “We need to take more tests,” he said, glancing at Meline with concern. “It’s important to determine the cause of those bruises.” Natalie felt her heart shatter. “What do you mean?” “Some marks suggest they may not be from an accident, Ms. Turner.” Natalie’s world shifted. “Not from an accident?” “Some of them appear recent. We need to investigate if someone has intentionally harmed her.” She stared at Meline, who smiled weakly, oblivious to the storm brewing around them. Suddenly, everything clicked into place—the tension, the disdain, the coldness. “It can’t be…” she stammered. Yet as her mother’s harsh voice rang through her memory, asserting dominance over her pain, clarity emerged like a dark silhouette. It felt insidious, lurking beneath family gatherings, twisted in the shadows. “Mom?” she whispered to herself, panic rising. Could her own family have played a part in this? The suspicion churned like a sickness deep inside her.
