Evelyn stood there, heart hammering in her chest, as Daniel’s eyes widened in shock. “Evelyn, wait—” he stammered, scrambling to sit up. The bed creaked as Noah sat up beside him, his expression shifting from confusion to fear.

“What the hell is this?” Evelyn shouted, her voice cracking. “You think I wouldn’t find out?”

“It was a mistake! It meant nothing!” Daniel’s voice was desperate, but it only fueled her anger.

Noah looked back and forth between them, confusion morphing into something darker. “Mom, please—”

“Don’t you dare defend him!” she shot back, tears stinging her eyes. “You both were supposed to be my family! What happened to us?”

Daniel opened his mouth, but just then, a notification chimed from his phone, cutting through the heavy silence. The name ‘Lisa’ flashed on the screen, and Evelyn felt as though the floor had dropped out from beneath her.

“It’s not what you think!” Daniel blurted, but his panic only made the betrayal sting sharper.

Evelyn felt a betrayal so deep it twisted her stomach. “I can’t stay,” she declared, shaking her head in disbelief. “I just can’t.”

She turned and stormed out, leaving both of them behind in stunned silence. The walls of their home felt suddenly hollow—all warmth replaced by an icy void.

Seeking Refuge

The chill of the outside air did little to ease her turmoil as Evelyn crossed the street to her sister Laura’s apartment. She pounded on the door, her breath coming in shaky gasps. When Laura opened it, her expression morphed from surprise to concern.

“Evelyn, what happened?” Laura asked, pulling her inside. “You look—”

“I can’t talk about it.” Her voice trembled, and the dam broke. “Daniel. Noah. They… there’s someone else.”

Laura’s eyes widened, but she nodded, taking Evelyn’s hands in hers. “Tell me everything.”

As Evelyn poured out her heart, Laura listened intently, the weight of her sister’s despair pressing hard against them. “I didn’t think he could do this to me,” Evelyn choked out. “Wasn’t four months of absence supposed to be a test of our love?”

“Sometimes absence reveals what’s truly there,” Laura said gently, her gaze steady.

Evelyn felt a surge of anger mixed with grief. “What does that mean for me? Maybe I shouldn’t have left.”

Before Laura could respond, Evelyn’s phone buzzed. She glanced at the screen and saw Daniel’s name. Her heart raced as she silenced it, resolve hardening. “I won’t back down. Not this time.”

“You have to do what’s best for you,” Laura offered, but Evelyn felt an emptiness in those supportive words.

Just then, a knock echoed from the door. Laura frowned as she moved to answer it. The door swung open, revealing a woman with an air of confidence that made Evelyn's skin crawl.

“Hi, I’m Lisa,” the woman said, a smile plastered on her face.

Evelyn’s breath caught in her throat as she heard hurried footsteps behind her. Noah burst into the room, eyes blazing with defiance.
