“What happened?” Ethan whispered, his voice thick with disbelief as he stared at Claire. “Where is everyone?”
For one second, he saw a flicker of hope in her eyes, before she looked away, letting a heavy silence settle between them.
“They went out,” she said, her voice barely a whisper.
“All of them?” His chest tightened with each word.
Claire nodded, her gaze dropping to the table. “When are they coming back?”
“January fourth,” she murmured, and those words hit Ethan like a slap. He blinked, processing her response. “Where did they go?”
“Cancún.” A tear slid down her cheek.
“Cancún?” Ethan repeated, his mind racing. “You’re telling me they left you—left our baby—to go on vacation?”
Claire pressed her hand against her abdomen, her breath short. “Diane insisted. She thought it would give me space to recover.”
“Space? What about food? What about help?” Ethan gestured wildly at the empty fridge. “You’re healing from surgery, Claire! Didn’t anyone think to prepare? Did anyone even call?”
“I…I thought I could manage,” Claire stammered, her eyes shimmering with regret.
The weight of the situation pressed down on Ethan, the anger bubbling to the surface. “You thought? They left you alone with a newborn—and they’re on a beach somewhere?!”
“Ethan, please,” she begged, her voice breaking. “It’s not that simple. Diane thought—”
“Diane thought?” He interrupted, incredulous. “What about what you need? What about what Lily needs?”
Claire covered her face with her hands, and Ethan felt his heart wrench. Flashes of his mother’s smiling, reassuring face filled his mind, but now it felt like a mask hiding a deep betrayal.
Ethan’s fingers shook as he reached for his phone, dialing Diane’s number with more force than he intended. Each ring felt like an eternity.
“Ethan,” she answered, her voice laced with surprise, “I didn’t expect to hear from you.”
“You didn’t expect me? You left Claire and Lily alone—and I want to know why!” His voice rose, each word harsh.
Diane sighed, a practiced calm threading through her tone. “It was a much-needed break for everyone involved, Ethan. Claire was supposed to rest.”
“Rest? You call abandoning them a ‘break’? How could you think this was acceptable?”
“It’s been stressful for all of us,” she said, her voice growing defensive. “After everything she went through, this was a chance for some relief.”
“Look, we thought—”
“Thought what? That she could handle it alone?” Ethan cut her off, anger swelling in his chest. “I can’t believe you would—”
Before he could finish, the line went dead. Ethan stared at the phone, breathing heavily, when suddenly a strange sound echoed from the nursery.
His heart dropped. “Lily?” With a surge of adrenaline, he rushed upstairs, fear clawing at his insides.
In the nursery
The sound of Lily’s cries pierced through the silence, drawing Ethan away from his spiraling thoughts. He rushed up the stairs, each step filled with dread. When he entered the nursery, the sight made his stomach knot: baby Lily was red-faced and wailing, her diaper sagging heavily with a mess, and her crib was a chaotic jumble of unwashed blankets and toys.
“Oh, Lily,” he murmured, instinctively reaching for her. The moment he picked her up, her tiny body felt so fragile in his arms. He could feel the warmth radiating from her little frame, but uncertainty curled around his heart. What was he supposed to do? He had never changed a diaper before.
His mind raced, the panic rising with every wail that escaped her lips. He placed her on the changing table, fumbling with the supplies. “Just breathe,” he told himself, trying to steady his hands. “You can do this.”
As he clumsily unwrapped the diaper, Lily’s cries shifted, morphing into tiny whimpers. “I’ve got you,” he whispered, focusing on her face instead of the mess beneath. Despite the chaos of the moment, he felt a flicker of connection with her, an instinct to protect.
Then, as he reached for the wipes, something caught his eye—a small piece of paper tucked under Lily's blanket. Curiosity clawed at him, and he pulled it out. The writing was neat but unsettling: “You should have trusted us.” Ethan's heart sank. What did this mean?
A confrontation and a revelation
Cramming the note into his pocket, Ethan hurried back downstairs, his pulse racing. He found Claire still at the kitchen table, looking more vulnerable than ever under the dim light. The sight of her twisted his heart. “We need to talk,” he said, urgency thickening his voice.
She looked up, her expression a mix of fear and resignation. “About what?”
“About your mother,” he shot back, anger flaring. “What is going on between you two? She left you here alone. Didn’t you need her?”
Claire’s eyes darted away, guilt etching deeper lines into her brow. “She thought… she thought it would be good for me to have some space,” she said quietly, her voice trembling. “But she didn’t prepare for my recovery.”
"Space? You needed support, not abandonment!" Each word felt like a hammer striking the wall between them. “Why did you let her do this?”
“I—I didn’t think it would be like this,” Claire stammered. “She’s always… been controlling. It’s complicated.”
“Complicated how?” he pressed. “What else have you kept from me?”
Claire’s expression hardened, and for a brief moment, he saw a flicker of defiance. “You don’t understand the way she manipulates everything, Ethan. I thought… I thought I could handle it.”
Just then, Ethan's phone buzzed violently against the table, cutting through the charged air. He glanced down, and his breath caught: a text from Brooke. “Are you finally home? We need to talk.”
His heart raced—what could she possibly want? As doubt and apprehension swirled, he felt cornered, uncertain of his next move. How could he face any of them now?
The Truth Unraveled
Ethan stood outside Brooke’s house, his heart pounding. He thought he would find answers inside, but the front door was locked tight. A flimsy piece of paper taped to the door caught his eye. “We’re sorry, Ethan. It’s too late now.”
His stomach sank. “What does that even mean?” He pushed the door, half-expecting it to open, but nothing budged. Desperation clawed at him. He pulled out his keys and glanced over his shoulder, but the street was empty.
“This isn’t happening,” he muttered, shoving the key into the lock again. After a few moments, the door creaked open, and he stepped into the dim hallway.
The air felt heavy, almost suffocating. Ethan called out, “Brooke? Jason?” Silence answered him. He scanned the living room, cluttered with remnants of family gatherings—forgotten toys, dusty photo frames—but no sign of life.
He moved deeper into the house, each step echoing his mounting anxiety. In the kitchen, he found a stack of photo albums on the table. The first album flipped open easily. He stared at the pictures of happy family moments, but something was off. Each face had been marked with a black X, distorting the smiles.
“What’s this?” he whispered, a chill creeping up his spine.
He rifled through the pages, the strange markings increasing with each turn. His heart raced. Had someone deliberately altered these? Was it a message?
Then a flash of movement caught his eye. A slip of paper wedged between two pages. He pulled it out, his hands shaking. The message read, “You can’t change what we’ve built.” Ethan's breath caught. What had they built?
The Unraveling
Returning home, Ethan found Claire still at the table, her gaze vacant and distant. The cryptic message swirled in his mind, and an unsettling question bloomed. “Claire, why didn’t you tell me?”
Claire met his eyes, the weight of secrets pressing down on her. “What do you mean?”
“About your mother’s plans. The trip, everything.” His voice rose. “You had to know!”
Her shoulders sagged, the truth spilling out. “Ethan, I thought... it was for the best. I believed it would help.”
“Help? Claire, you left our newborn here! Alone! How could you let them do this?”
She looked away, a tear tracing her cheek. “I’ve been conditioned to think it was right. My mother... she manipulates everything. But I thought... I thought making her happy would keep us safe.”
“Safe? At what cost?” Ethan’s voice cracked, realization dawning.
“I accepted it. I didn’t want to rock the boat,” she confessed, her voice barely above a whisper.
“You knew all along? How could you support her?” His heart raced, anger mixing with betrayal.
“I thought I was doing what was best for our family,” Claire replied, tears streaming down her face. “If I stood by her, maybe she wouldn’t lash out at us. I was trying to protect you. Protect Lily.”
Ethan stepped back, the weight of her words crashing over him. “So this was all a lie? Our family, our life... You’ve been covering for her. All this time.”
Claire nodded, her shoulders trembling. “I didn’t know it would tear us apart.”
In that moment, a void opened inside Ethan. He had to confront not just Diane’s deceit but Claire’s willingness to let it happen. The family he thought he knew had disintegrated before his eyes.
