I Came Home to Find My Family Had Abandoned Us for a Vacation While I Was Away
Confrontation
“What happened?” Ethan whispered, dropping his suitcase. “Where is everyone?”
For one second, relief crossed Claire’s face. Then she looked away.
“They went out.”
“All of them?”
She nodded, her gaze fixed on the empty table, a silence stretching painfully between them.
“When are they coming back?”
Claire’s voice was barely audible. “January fourth.”
Ethan stared at her, disbelief pulsing through him. “January fourth? Where did they go?”
Tears rolled down her cheeks. “Cancún.”
“Cancún? You’re telling me they left you here all alone?”
“I didn’t know,” she murmured, her voice trembling.
The refrigerator stood bare before him, a testament to the betrayal as the weight of her words sank in. “I prepared meals. I thought…”
“They planned it without consulting you,” Claire said, her eyes now locked onto his, a mixture of sadness and anger lighting her features. “They left me here with a newborn while they... while they went on vacation.”
Ethan felt the ground shift beneath him. “They didn’t even ask me.”
A bitter laugh escaped Claire’s lips. “Who cares what you think? You were just supposed to be gone.”
“That’s not fair,” Ethan said, raising his voice. “I trusted them to take care of you. I wanted to surprise you… I wanted to be here for you.”
“And yet... here I am.” Claire’s words dropped like stones, her pain cutting deep.
Ethan rubbed his temples, the conflict raging within him. Loyalty warring with the raw anger that surged at the thought of his family abandoning them. “What are we going to do?”
“I don’t know.” Claire’s shoulders slumped, and Ethan felt every ounce of her weight resting on him.
Confrontation with Diane
Ethan grabbed his phone, hands trembling as he dialed his mother’s number. He needed answers. “Diane, where are you?”
The line crackled, and her voice floated through, casual and carefree. “Ethan! We’re at the resort. Can you believe this weather?”
“Weather? You left Claire here alone with a newborn! What were you thinking?”
“She’s fine, Ethan. She’s a big girl. We all needed a break,” Diane replied, a hint of annoyance in her tone.
The anger boiled inside him. “A break? At what cost? You didn’t even consult me!”
“The baby will be fine. We had this planned for months!”
Ethan ran a hand through his hair, pacing the floor. “Planned for months without considering Claire’s situation? You knew I wasn’t coming back until the fifth!”
“You worry too much. She has support. I’m sure she’s fine,” Diane insisted, dismissing him with her voice.
“Support? You’re all gone! Do you have any idea how this feels?”
“This isn’t about you, Ethan. This is about us needing to recharge,” she said, her tone firm.
The realization hit him like a punch to the gut: his mother had undermined everything he’d done for Claire and Lily. “I can’t believe you. You put your needs before your own daughter-in-law’s. You let her down.”
Diane’s voice turned cold. “You don’t understand. We need our time.”
“Time? You think this is okay? It’s not! You need to come home!”
Her laugh echoed in his ear. “You’re overreacting. Claire is just fine.”
In a surge of rage, Ethan shouted, “Fine? She’s been abandoned!”
He barely heard her reply as he hung up in disbelief, the phone clattering against the table, leaving him feeling completely isolated from both Claire and his family.
