I Came Home to Discover My Family Had Stolen Everything I Built with My Wife While I Was Away

A Dangerous Game

I stood so quickly the chair rolled backward and hit the cabinet.

For a second, all the sounds of the night sharpened—the hum of the refrigerator, the distant splash of pool water, Emily moving softly upstairs. I looked around the office. At the bookshelves. At the smoke detector. At the lamp near the desk.

I turned off the laptop camera with a piece of tape, then checked beneath the desk. Nothing obvious. I wasn’t a surveillance expert, but I’d learned enough overseas to know that obvious wasn’t the standard.

I took screenshots of the message and saved them to the drive.

Tyler leaned in the office doorway, smiling like he’d caught me doing something amusing.

My little brother had always been handsome in an unfinished way, like life had given him good features and he had mistaken them for character. He wore expensive clothes carelessly. His hair was longer than I remembered. His eyes had the restless brightness of someone who needed the room to notice him.

“Yeah. Must be weird being back.”

His gaze flicked to the laptop. “Lots changed.”

He stepped into the office without invitation. “Mom says you seemed tense.”

He picked up a brass paperweight from my desk, turned it over, and set it down slightly off-center. The small act annoyed me more than it should have.

“You know,” he said, “I think it’s really great that you’re home. Family needs to stick together, right?”

“What do you mean?” I asked, forcing the words out calmly.

“Oh, come on.” He leaned against the doorframe. “We’ve missed you. Things aren’t quite what they seem, but Mom’s just trying to get everything back in order.”

Broken Bonds

“What do you mean ‘back in order’?”

“You know how it is. Everybody has their little roles to fill.” He grinned, but it felt wrong. “Mom just wants to make sure that everything’s best for you.”

Tension wrapped around the room like a thick fog. I could see it in the way he shifted his weight, the way his smile seemed glued to his face.

“Tyler,” I said softly, “what did you do?”

He laughed, but it didn’t sound real. “Come on, Jake. Nothing that you have to worry about.”

“No, it’s not nothing.”

“We thought you’d be happy to see how well things were going.”

“Oh, I’ll bet you did.”

I pushed past him, into the hallway, my mind racing with a thousand pieces suddenly snapping into place. What had I been blind to? My heart raced as I approached the living room, the loud sounds of laughter blending into something sinister.

They didn’t even notice me standing in the doorway, watching them. My mother gestured at the pool with a flourish, and Tyler leaned in to whisper something in her ear. When she threw back her head and laughed again, I felt a chill creeping up my spine. I was looking at the faces of people I thought I knew.

“Jake’s back!” Tyler announced with an overdone cheer, as if that would somehow mask the tension crashing from me.

I stepped into the room, forcing a smile that felt plastered on. I wanted to demand answers, to expose the lies intertwined around us.
