Part Three: The Calm Before the Storm

Days passed, but nothing felt normal. The air between Diane and Kenny had been thick with unspoken words. I felt the weight of her presence, a dark cloud hanging over everything. She had the audacity to act as if nothing happened, sweet smiles replacing the venom she'd dripped like poison.

My days blurred—work, kids, sleepless nights worrying about Frankie. He seemed quieter now, and that hollow look in his eyes was a shadow of what he used to be. Was he afraid? Did he sense the brooding storm in our home?

At night, when the kids finally fell asleep, I would sit on the edge of the couch with Frankie leaning against my legs. I stroked his fur absentmindedly, feeling the weight of my heart. This was not the home we built together. This was an echo of something tarnished.

One evening, I pulled out my phone and scrolled through the photos, looking for a sweet memory to ease my worries. There it was: the day we brought Frankie home. The kids were so small! But then I stumbled upon a grainy photo I couldn't place—a snapshot of Diane and Kenny, laughing at a backyard barbecue, but something was off.

In the corner of the image, a shadow loomed. I squinted, freezing. What was it? A figure—slightly obscured, but strikingly familiar. I felt sick as the pieces began to click into place. That wasn’t just a passerby; it was someone from our past—a name buried deep I hadn’t thought about in years.

“What do you think you’re hiding, Diane?” I whispered to the empty room.

Part Three: The Final Showdown

The following evening, Kenny and I sat at the kitchen table, tension filling the air like the aroma of burnt toast. I had decided it was finally time to confront her—to pull back her pretty facade and reveal the cracks. I needed to protect my children, to preserve the home that felt like quicksand beneath my feet.

The door swung open, and there stood Diane, her smile too wide, eyes shining with an unnatural brightness. “Hello, lovelies!”

"We need to talk," I said, my voice as steady as I could manage.

She blinked, and the glee faded for just a heartbeat. “Oh? Is it about the dog again?”

I could feel Kenny's presence behind me, ready to support whatever came next. “It’s about you.”

She feigned confusion, tilting her head. But I pressed forward. “You know, we’ve spoken before about boundaries. About respect. What happened that day with Frankie was a violation.”

Diane laughed, but it rang hollow. “You’re being dramatic. That sweet dog needed exercise!”

“And you didn’t care one bit about what could happen to him, did you?” I shot back.
