Secrets Buried

A cold dread settled around me. “What do you mean, hide?”

“It’s complicated,” Caleb stammered. “There are people who want that card. It has information that could ruin everything.”

My heart raced. “What kind of information?”

“Just…just trust me. We have to keep it safe.”

In that moment, I knew that whatever was on that card would change everything I thought I knew about Emily. I couldn’t be rational anymore; I had to know the truth. “No. I won’t leave my wife’s memory in shadows.”

The atmosphere felt electric as Caleb exchanged a glance with Mother. They were hiding something monumental.

Four years of military service had trained me to see truth hidden in lies, and in that moment, I felt the walls of my reality closing in. I took a step back, looking between them. “If you won’t tell me, I’ll find a way.”

I turned to leave the study, determination ignited in my chest.

“Daniel, please,” Caleb pleaded, but I ignored him, already heading for the door. I knew I wouldn’t stop until I unravelled the threads of this lie.

The Truth Unveiled

Outside the house, I felt the air shift, heavy with unspoken words. I had to think fast. Violence had become part of my life, but so had deception. I had fought for my family, but now they were the ones standing in my way.

I slipped the card from my pocket and fished my phone out again, ready to call Luis once more. But before I could dial, a figure stepped out of the shadows beside the house. A woman, familiar yet unrecognizable. I squinted. “You shouldn’t be here.”

“I had to come,” she said, voice filled with urgency. “It’s about the card.”

“Who are you?”

“Someone you trust.” Her eyes flickered. “I’m a friend of Emily’s. She was scared, Daniel. She knew something was wrong.”

I felt the ground shift beneath me as I processed her words. “Why didn’t she tell me?”

“She couldn’t. She was being watched. It’s why she refused to go to the hospital. They were manipulating everything.”

“Manipulating? What do you mean?”

“You need to listen. Whoever is behind this won’t stop. That card holds secrets that could destroy your family.”

My heart raced. “Secrets?”

“There are names, locations, evidence. Emily was gathering everything. You have to get it away from here.”

Then it hit me. The secrecy, the controlled environment, the whispers I had overheard. “Who was watching her?”

“I can’t say. But you’re not safe here. No one is.”

The truth weighed heavy, suffocating. The very family I had fought for was entangled in a web of deceit. I turned slightly, looking back at the house, the coffin looming like a specter. And then it happened—a single thought sliced through the fog. I felt as if everything was spiraling. “No. No, it can’t be.”

“Daniel—” she began, but I cut her off.

A flood of realization washed over me. I could feel a darker force at play, and as I turned back to face the woman, a chill settled in my bones. “I need to know which of you was involved.”

“You need to leave. Right now.”

Her urgency left no room for doubt. But as I stepped back, my phone buzzed again, an unknown number lighting up the screen. I hesitated, heart pounding. Would I discover something that would shatter my world entirely?

Taking a deep breath, I answered, the air thick with tension. “Hello?”

“Daniel? You need to listen,” a voice said, one I had not expected to hear. “You’re in danger. I’m coming to get you.”

Everything hung in the balance, and in that moment, I realized how deeply entwined my family’s fate was with secrets that could destroy us all. I turned to the woman, my resolve hardening. “You’d better start talking.”
