The Nursery

The nursery was just as I had imagined, yet somehow foreign. Framed photos of Emily and me adorned the walls. Each image held a memory, but they felt tainted now. A sonogram photo taped next to the crib whispered a promise snatched by fate.

My son lay in the crib, his tiny body wracked with cries, fists trembling. I reached for him, feeling utterly unprepared, yet instinctively knowing I would protect him with everything. As soon as I held him against my chest, silence washed over him.

“I’m your dad,” I whispered, hearing how desperate I sounded.

“Emily named him Noah, she said so in every letter.” My voice cracked. My mother’s presence loomed behind me, her expression unreadable. “Noah Daniel Carter.”

Yet her gaze held something darker, a possessiveness I hadn’t seen before. “She filled your head with sentimental nonsense,” she said flatly.

I imagined the long nights we would spend together, crying and laughing, as Emily would have cherished those moments. But between us, shadows twisted and grew. I had to protect Noah, but from what?

Mother took a step closer, her voice dropping. “Daniel, this is irrational.” That word hung like poison in the air. Irrational. In a house filled with deception, who was truly irrational?

Then I heard it again, the faint echo of Caleb’s voice from the study. “No, I don’t know what’s on it. Just get here.” My heart raced. Something was seriously wrong.

“He found something,” the voice continued, urgency crackling through the lines.

I turned to Caleb, my throat dry. “What did you find?”

Unraveling Threads

With a sudden surge of adrenaline, I crossed the threshold into the study. Caleb’s face went pale. “What was that about?”

I held out the memory card. “I found this. What does it mean?”

“You shouldn’t have touched it,” he muttered. His fingers twitched, and I could see the fear leeching back into his eyes.

“You know something, Caleb. Tell me.”

He shifted, casting a glance toward our mother. “It’s not something you want to hear.”

I pressed harder. “Why was Emily so paranoid? Why was she afraid of the hospital?”

Caleb clenched his jaw. “There were rumors. She was scared of something, but we thought it was just the stress.”

“Rumors?” I hissed. “What rumors?”

Mother stepped forward, her eyes like ice. “It doesn’t matter now.”

“It matters more than anything,” I shouted. The room felt like it was closing in on me. “You guys hid this from me, and now my wife is dead.”

Caleb’s face crumpled. “I didn’t know how to tell you. You were away. You were supposed to be safe.”

“Safe?” I echoed, the word bitter on my tongue. “I need to know. What are you hiding?”

Suddenly, Caleb’s phone vibrated, and he grabbed it quickly. I could see it was an unknown number, but as he answered, his expression shifted. “What do you mean?” His voice went cold. “You’re sure about this?”

“The body cannot leave the house,” the voice on the other end said, and his eyes widened.

“What do you mean, it can’t leave?” I cut in, but he pressed the end call button, his face pale.

“Daniel, you need to listen. We have to hide the card. We can’t let anyone know anything.”
