USB Arrival and a Call to Mara

The envelope thudded against the wooden desk of my design studio, the USB humming faintly in the quiet after Maya’s humming faded into the evening.

I brushed a stray curl from my face, feeling the sting of tears that had finally stopped, as if the room itself waited for my next move.

“Mara, pick up,” I whispered into the phone, my voice steadier than I felt.

She answered on the second ring, crisp and professional, “I’ve got the transfer ready. The amount you asked for will wipe Ethan’s assets clean—$820,000, plus the contingency fund we discussed.”

My heart hammered; the numbers were both a weapon and a lifeline.

“And the lawyer reviewing it?” I asked, fingers tightening around the call holder.

“Already on board. He’ll sign off tomorrow. It’ll be irreversible once the wire goes through.”

I closed my eyes, hearing Maya’s song in the back of my mind, the chorus that always meant “home.”

“Thank you, Mara. I’ll be ready.”

When I hung up, the studio lights glowed over the scattered sketches, and I felt a cold certainty settle in my chest: I could finally take back the future he tried to hide.

Meeting Mara and the Call that Exposes Miami

Mara arrived at the downtown café in a navy blazer, her briefcase humming with the promise of discreet power.

She slid into the seat opposite me, pushing a folder across the table. “Here’s the plan,” she said, tapping the documents. “We’ll freeze the accounts, file the injunction, and you’ll have the money before Ethan can react.”

I nodded, eyes flicking to the espresso steaming beside me, the aroma mixing with the city’s rush.

“What about the USB evidence?” I asked, thumb resting on the edge of the folder.

“We’ll embed it in the filing, make it impossible for him to dispute. Once the court signs, the transfer becomes yours.”

Just then, Maya’s school phone rang, its screen flashing “Maya’s Class.” I answered, expecting her chirpy voice.

“Hey, sweetie, it’s Mom,” I said, but the sound on the other end changed.

“…yeah, I’m on a call, uh…in a lobby,” a man’s voice murmured, the background a low murmur of distant chatter and the clink of glass.

“Ethan?” I heard myself ask, a cold blade slicing through the café’s hum.

His voice, strained but calm, replied, “Just waiting for the front desk. Business meeting—Miami.”

The realization hit like a gust of wind through the window: he was already there, in a hotel lobby, with the woman from the photos.

Confrontation in the Hotel Room

I clicked “join” and the screen flickered to reveal Ethan sitting on a narrow balcony, the sea breeze fluttering the edge of the curtain.

“What are you doing, Ethan?” I asked, voice steady despite the tremor in my hands.

He stared at the camera, eyes darting, the hotel’s neon sign reflecting off his glass.

“I’m… I’m sorry,” he murmured, the words sounding like a rehearsed apology.

“Sorry for what? The photos, the secret flight, the lies?” I pressed, feeling Maya’s humming from earlier still echoing in my mind.

He swallowed, the sound swallowed by the distant hum of the lobby.

“I was going to leave you,” he said, the words cutting sharper than any knife.

“You’re divorcing me?” My throat tightened.

He nodded, his gaze flicking to a framed window view of palm trees.

“There’s… there’s someone else. Chloe. She found out about the deal with the investor.”

“Chloe?” I whispered, the name a cold bite.

He leaned closer, the screen catching the glint of his watch.

“She’s got photos. Not just of us, but of the transaction that could ruin our family’s name. She’s blackmailing me.”

I felt the floor shift beneath me, the weight of the USB drive suddenly heavier.
