The lawyer's voice droned on, monotone and steady, but each word felt like a vice tightening around my chest. “Layla had engaged the services of a private investigator…” The room buzzed with whispers, and I could feel every eye darting to Mark. His face paled, a flicker of recognition flashing across his features.
“What?” I hissed under my breath, momentarily distracted from the lawyer's reading. Layla had suspected Mark? It was a bitter realization, yet it ignited a fire within me. I needed to know the truth.
The lawyer continued, “Evidence collected included various documents, namely, hotel receipts and text messages…” My heart raced. I could only imagine the lengths my sister had gone to in order to protect herself. I could almost see the details laid out in her mind, mounting evidence against him, a repository of distrust.
Then I caught Mark's eye, or more accurately, his avoidance of it. He shifted uncomfortably, his fingers tapping nervously against the pew. Did he think he could brush this off? I leaned closer, ready to confront him, but the lawyer pressed on, oblivious to the rising tension. “...all leading to the conclusion that Layla believed her husband was being unfaithful.”
My blood ran cold. In that moment, I vowed to find everything Layla had discovered. The betrayal twisted like a knife in my gut, but mixed with it was a fierce determination. She had seen something, and I would uncover it.

“And finally,” the lawyer said, “Layla left a video recording with specific instructions regarding its viewing.” My heart pounded as he pressed play on a little device. The screen flickered to life, revealing my sister’s face, her expression eerily calm. “If you’re watching this, I’m no longer with you.” Her voice resonated through the room, cutting through the thick tension.
“I need to tell you all something important,” she continued, a tremor of urgency lacing her tone. “I’ve been afraid for my life, and I have reasons to believe someone very close to me is plotting against me.” My throat tightened; my instincts screamed that the truth was about to shatter our world.
Everyone held their breath, entranced by the weight of her words. “I gathered evidence. I wanted to ensure there would be no doubt about what I was facing.” My mind raced. Who was she protecting herself from? The air felt charged, as though we were on the brink of uncovering something monumental.
As she detailed her fears, I noticed Mark’s hands balling into fists. He was visibly trembling now, the color draining from his face, his eyes darting towards the door. My gut twisted, sensing danger in his reaction.
And then the moment came—a chilling pause hung in the air, and Layla's voice echoed with a finality that sent shivers down my spine. “If something happens to me, it's Mark.” The screen blinked, and her face vanished, leaving a stunned silence in the room.
