“Why are you telling me this now, Grace?” I demanded, my voice tight with panic. “What could possibly be so urgent?”
She looked me straight in the eye, her expression grave. “Because there are people out there looking for us—looking for me and for David. They believe he stole something vital from them.”
My heart raced as I absorbed her words. “Stole? What did he take?”
Grace hesitated, glancing down at her hands before meeting my gaze again. “I can’t explain everything now, but please—trust me. If they find out where we are, they won’t stop until they get what they want.”
“What do we do?” I asked, the weight of the world pressing against my chest.
“I have a plan,” she said, her voice steady though fear flickered in her eyes. “We need to pack up and leave before—”
Suddenly, a loud crash echoed from downstairs, cutting her off. My heart dropped, and I shot a glance toward the door. “What was that?”

Grace’s eyes widened, her face draining of color. “We have to go, now!”
We raced down the stairs, adrenaline pumping through our veins. The living room was in shambles—cushions strewn everywhere, a shattered vase littering the floor. Panic surged through me as I realized our sanctuary had been violated.
“They were here,” I whispered, my voice shaking as I surveyed the chaos. “We’re not safe.”
Grace's phone buzzed violently against her thigh. She pulled it out, her expression shifting to dread as she read the message. “They know where we are,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper. “They’re coming for me.”
“What do we do?” I asked, my mind racing with unimaginable scenarios.
Just as she opened her mouth to respond, a shadow shifted outside the door, and our eyes locked. “Oh my God,” Grace breathed, terror washing over her. “They found us.”
Before I could think, I reached for the door handle, but she gripped my arm tightly. “No! We can’t let them in.”
With every ounce of fear coiling in my gut, I backed away, my heart hammering. I felt time stretching, everything slowing as I braced for what might come next. The shadowy figure loomed closer, and just as I thought we’d found a way out, it swung the door open with a chilling creak.
Just then, I caught a glimpse of the figure—a hulking presence framed in darkness—and I froze. Grace’s shocking revelation swirled in my mind, her true identity igniting a tempest of confusion. As I saw the shadowy figure reappear in my mirror with a gun drawn, the reality of our perilous situation hit me like a brick. My breath hitched, and all I could think was, what now?
