Husband's Shocking Absence During Wife's Hospital Stay Reveals a Heartbreaking Truth

Husband's Shocking Absence During Wife's Hospital Stay Reveals a Heartbreaking Truth
← Previous Part (1) Reading Part 2 of 3

Sarah’s phone rang. She answered, her expression turning grim. “That was the hospital administrator. They’re conducting an internal investigation. Apparently, someone anonymously sent them a copy of your hospital records, highlighting the discrepancies regarding Marcus’s quarantine dispensation.” A cold dread washed over me. Someone knew. Someone was pulling at the threads of this carefully woven lie. But who?

Echoes of a Past Life

The hospital investigation intensified, and with it, the scrutiny on Marcus. He remained stoic, publicly maintaining his story of being overwhelmed with work. But the anonymous tip had opened a floodgate of questions. I found myself revisiting old memories, searching for cracks in the man I thought I knew. I remembered a conversation from early in our marriage, a fleeting mention of a childhood friend who had needed a heart transplant. He’d been devastated when she hadn’t survived.

Driven by a desperate need for answers, I started my own investigation, using my auditing skills to navigate the hospital’s complex databases. I discovered that several of the foundation’s beneficiaries had received transplants using organs procured during Marcus's quarantine period. The timing was too precise to be a coincidence. I found records of unusual pressure on the organ procurement team, subtle directives to prioritize certain patients. It was a pattern of manipulation, carefully concealed within layers of bureaucratic language.

One name kept appearing: Elias Vance. He was the lead organ procurement coordinator, and according to his personnel file, he’d been recently promoted despite a history of minor disciplinary actions. I tracked down Elias, finding him withdrawn and visibly anxious. He agreed to meet me, but only in a secluded park, late at night. “He… he made things difficult for me,” Elias stammered, his eyes darting around nervously. “He wanted certain organs to go to certain people. He said it was about saving lives, but…” He trailed off, fear gripping his face. “He implied my career depended on my cooperation.”

“Did he ever mention *why* those specific patients?” I pressed, my voice barely a whisper. Elias hesitated, then said, “He talked about a debt. A promise he’d made a long time ago. Something about a life he couldn’t save…” Suddenly, a shadowy figure emerged from the darkness, approaching us quickly.

The Weight of a Promise

The figure was Marcus. He didn’t shout, didn't threaten. His face was a mask of controlled fury. “Clara,” he said, his voice dangerously low. “You shouldn’t have dug this up.” I stood my ground, despite the tremor in my hands. “What have you done, Marcus? What promise are you talking about?” He glanced at Elias, who was shrinking back in terror. “It started a long time ago. My best friend, Amelia, needed a heart transplant. We were kids. The system failed her. The organ never came in time.”

“And you decided to fix the system… by manipulating it?” I challenged, my voice rising. “I used my position to ensure others didn't suffer the same fate,” he retorted, his eyes blazing. “Those patients… they were all people who had fallen through the cracks. People who wouldn’t have had a chance without my intervention.” “But at whose expense?” I demanded. “You broke the rules, Marcus. You compromised the integrity of the entire organ donation system!” He didn’t answer, instead focusing on Elias. “You told her, didn’t you? You betrayed my trust.”
