Chapter 5: The Last Message

We sat in the cramped living room, the weight of the day pressing heavily on our shoulders. June stared at the coffee table, twirling a pen between her fingers. “I think I want to write him a letter,” she finally said, breaking the silence.

Ava looked up, her eyes shimmering with uncertainty. “Do you think he’ll even read it?”

“Who cares?” Claire interjected, a hint of defiance in her tone. “We deserve to say something. He left us, but that doesn’t mean we can’t reach out.”

“It’s not that simple,” I interjected, my heart pounding at their eagerness. “You don’t know what kind of man he—”

“We don’t know anything!” June shot back. “But we have to try. He’s still our father.”

I took a deep breath, wrestling my frustration down. I wanted to protect them, to shield them from the hurtful uncertainties. Hadn’t I spent my entire life doing just that?

Just as the conversation began to deflate, my phone buzzed on the table. I reached for it, and my stomach dropped. A message flashed on the screen from an unknown number — a cold punch that stole my breath away.

“I want to see you. It's time we talked.”

Ava leaned closer, squinting at the screen. “Who is that?”

“I... I don’t know,” I stammered, my heart racing. “It must be a joke.”

But deep down, I felt the ground shifting beneath me. Could it really be him? I looked at the girls, their faces a mixture of hope and fear. The atmosphere thickened, tension crackling in the air like static electricity.

Chapter 6: The Revelations

Hours later, sitting on the edge of my bed, I felt trapped in a whirlwind of dread. That same unknown number had called, and before I could brace myself, I answered, listening to the gravelly voice on the other end.

“I’m a private investigator,” he said. “I’ve been tracking your brother for years.”

My breath caught in my throat. “What do you mean?”

“He’s not gone, Noah. He’s living under a new identity. There are dangerous people looking for him, and he’s been watching you raise the girls.”

The punch landed hard, reeling me back. I felt shaken, as if someone had pulled the rug from beneath me. “Why would he do that? Why not reach out?”

“Fear. He believes he’s protecting them… and you.”

As the investigator’s words sunk in, pieces of a puzzle I never knew existed began to align. My brother hadn’t abandoned his daughters; he had been running from threats that loomed ever closer.

My mind raced back to his last days, his haunted eyes, the way he shuffled through memories like ghosts he couldn’t quite escape. Had I unknowingly carried the burden of his fears all these years? I felt bile rise in my throat.

And what about the girls? How would they react to this truth? Would they want to find him? Or worse, would they blame me for the years they spent in the dark?

I swallowed hard, the enormity of the moment pressing down on me like a vice. Between protecting my family and facing the specter of their past, I stood at a precipice I didn’t dare approach.

This was no longer just about me. It was about the fragile balance of our lives, a delicate thread woven between fear and love.
