The Exchange

“I thought it was time,” Claire replied softly. “I wanted to give this to you. To all of you." She glanced at the girls as if seeking their blessing. “I thought you might be ready.”

I took a sharp breath, struggling against the whirlwind of emotions. “Ready for what?”

Hazel leaned in, her voice barely above a whisper. “Dad, we’ve been trying to figure out how to bring you back to life... or how to help you feel alive again.”

“This isn’t fair,” I snapped, the words bursting forth before I could stop them. “You shouldn’t have to carry that weight.”

Iris looked down, tears spilling over her cheeks. “But we do want to carry it. For you.”

Then Hazel added, “You sold everything—your watch, the car. You’ve given up everything. Let us help you stand again.”

“Stand? I’m not the one who needs standing. You both... you have more strength than I ever imagined.” I felt the room shrink. Even the air around us felt heavier, suffocating.

“But Dad, we were waiting,” Hazel continued, her voice trembling. “We thought you’d want to take a chance after we started walking. After we started living.”

Claire bit her lip, her eyes searching mine. She must have seen the turmoil churning within me. “What if we all do this together? Just for today? No expectations.”

In that moment, something shifted. The fear began to crack just enough for a sliver of light to slip through. I could finally breathe. Maybe just for today, I might step down from my carefully constructed pedestal and let them help me.

The First Steps Forward

The question hung above us, heavy and foreboding. I glanced at Claire, who seemed to see right through me. “It’s not about what happened before. It’s about what we create together now.”

Taking a deep breath, I opened the box, revealing delicate silver bracelets—small tokens meant to symbolize our journey together.

Hazel and Iris exchanged glances, a spark igniting between them. “We can wear these today,” Iris suggested, her voice rising with excitement. “Each time we take a step, we remember.”

I watched as they clasped the bracelets around their wrists, a tangible reminder of their strength, their willingness to lift me up. While I was still terrified, an unfamiliar warmth swelled in my chest.

But then, the moment shattered. My phone buzzed loudly from the table. I jolted as I grabbed it, my heart racing with déjà vu. Who was trying to ruin this moment?

When I saw the name flashing across the screen, my breath hitched: "Jess." My heart dropped. The one person I thought I’d never hear from again.

The story continues…
