Wade pulled into his driveway at 9:58 p.m., expecting to surprise his son, Finn, after being away for work on an oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico. But as he stepped out of his truck, he was met with an unfamiliar sight. A strange truck occupied his parking spot, and the sound of laughter and chatter came from inside his house. He felt a knot in his stomach as he approached the front door.
As he entered, he saw strange children occupying his couch, and a tattooed man asleep in his recliner. Wade's mind racing, he made his way to the kitchen, where he found his eight-year-old son, Finn, standing on a chair, cooking boxed macaroni for everyone. Silver duct tape covered his injured forearm. Wade's heart sank as he lifted Finn down from the chair.
"Dad, please don't be angry," Finn begged, his eyes welling up with tears. Wade's confusion and concern deepened as he tried to process what he was seeing. "What's going on, son? What happened to your arm?" he asked, trying to keep his tone calm.
Chapter 1: A Father's Worst Nightmare
Finn hesitated before speaking, "I burned it on the stove, and...and I got punished." Wade's grip on Finn's shoulders tightened as he struggled to contain his anger. "Punished? What do you mean?" he asked, his voice low and even. Finn's voice barely above a whisper, "I have to sleep in the shed when dinner is late." Wade's eyes scanned the room, his mind racing with questions and fears. And then, he saw the tattooed man, still asleep in his recliner, a sense of unease settling in the pit of his stomach. Suddenly, the man stirred, and Wade's world was about to change forever.
Wade's eyes locked onto the tattooed man, who was now stretching and yawning. "Who are you?" Wade demanded, trying to keep his tone neutral. The man, seemingly unfazed by Wade's presence, replied, "I'm a friend of Brandi's. I've been helping out around here while you were away." Wade's instincts screamed at him that something was off, but he couldn't quite put his finger on it.
Finn, still clinging to his father's leg, whispered, "Dad, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to make you angry." Wade's heart went out to his son, and he knelt down to reassure him. "It's not your fault, son. I'm just trying to understand what's going on." As he looked up at the tattooed man, he noticed a faint scar above his left eyebrow. A scar that looked eerily familiar.
Chapter 2: Unraveling the Mystery
Wade's mind was racing with questions, but before he could ask any of them, the tattooed man spoke up, "Why don't you go ahead and get some rest, Finn? Your dad and I need to talk." Finn hesitated, looking up at his father for reassurance. Wade nodded, and Finn slowly backed away, his eyes fixed on his father. As Finn disappeared into the hallway, Wade turned his attention back to the tattooed man, his anger and concern simmering just below the surface. "What's going on here?" Wade asked, his voice firm but controlled. The tattooed man smirked, "Let's just say Brandi and I have an understanding." Wade's grip on his temper began to slip, and he took a step forward, his eyes blazing with fury.
The tattooed man held up his hands, "Hey, no need to get hostile. I'm just trying to help out." Wade's anger boiled over, "Help out? By punishing my son? By making him sleep in the shed?" The tattooed man shrugged, "It's just discipline, man. Finn needs to learn responsibility." Wade's vision began to blur with rage, and he took another step forward, his fists clenched. Suddenly, he heard a noise behind him and turned to see Finn standing in the doorway, a look of terror on his face.
"Dad, please don't hurt him," Finn begged, his voice trembling. Wade's anger faltered, and he looked at his son, feeling a pang of guilt and regret. He took a deep breath and turned back to the tattooed man. "I think it's time for you to leave," Wade said, his voice firm but controlled. The tattooed man sneered, "Or what? You'll call the cops? I don't think so." Wade's eyes locked onto the man, and he felt a sense of determination wash over him. He was going to get to the bottom of this, no matter what it took.
