Family Reunion Turns Unexpected When One Cousin Reveals a Stunning Career Twist

Family Reunion Turns Unexpected When One Cousin Reveals a Stunning Career Twist
← Previous Part (1) Reading Part 2 of 3

“Essentially, yes,” I replied. “Although, I didn't mention it to garner attention. I simply answered Aunt Diane’s question honestly.” The air crackled with unspoken tension. I could see the calculations happening in their eyes – the reassessment of years of judgment, the slow realization that they had underestimated me. But beneath the surface, I sensed something else: a growing fear. A fear that the carefully curated narrative of their perfect family was starting to unravel. Ryan, suddenly looking vulnerable, asked, "What exactly *is* TalentStream?"

Unearthing the Past

“TalentStream is a platform that connects top engineering talent with innovative companies,” I explained to Ryan, ignoring the increasingly hostile glares from Aunt Diane. “We use a proprietary algorithm to match skills and company culture, ensuring a long-term fit. We've been approached by several venture capital firms, but we’re currently self-funded.” My mother finally found her voice, but it was laced with disapproval. “This is all very…sudden, Josh. You never mentioned any of this before. All those years you were ‘working on the internet,’ we thought you were just…drifting.”

“I preferred to let my work speak for itself,” I said, keeping my tone even. “Besides, you were all so focused on Ryan and his ‘potential,’ there wasn’t much room for conversation about my ‘internet thing.’” Grandpa, who had been surprisingly quiet, spoke again. “Your grandmother would have been proud, Josh. She always said you had a good head for business, even when you were taking things apart just to see how they worked.” A wave of emotion washed over me, a rare moment of validation from the one person who always believed in me. But the moment was short-lived. Diane, refusing to let me have the upper hand, launched into a tirade about the importance of a “real education” and the dangers of “risky ventures.”

“This is ridiculous,” Ryan interjected, his voice rising. “I’m supposed to be the one getting congratulated, not listening to a family drama. You all just wanted me to be successful so you could brag about it!” He turned to me, a flicker of something akin to respect in his eyes. “Tell me about TalentStream. How did you even build something like that?” As I began to explain the years of coding, the countless rejections, and the unwavering belief in my vision, I noticed my mother subtly signaling to Diane, a desperate plea in her eyes. But Diane was already on her phone, furiously typing. “She’s calling someone,” I realized, a cold dread creeping into my heart. “I think she’s calling Nexa.”

The Call and the Fallout

My prediction proved correct. Within minutes, Diane was on speakerphone, her voice dripping with saccharine concern as she spoke to someone named ‘Mr. Henderson’ at Nexa. “Yes, hello, this is Diane Miller…Ryan’s aunt. I just wanted to verify something about Ryan’s hiring process. There seems to be a…misunderstanding. A young man claiming to be the CEO of a recruiting firm is suggesting he was instrumental in Ryan’s selection. It’s all very confusing.” I could feel Ryan’s eyes burning into me, a mixture of betrayal and panic. Mr. Henderson’s voice, calm and professional, came through the speaker. “We’re aware of TalentStream, Mrs. Miller. They’ve been an invaluable partner. In fact, Mr. Josh Miller is the reason we were able to rapidly expand our engineering team.”
