Family Drama Unfolds as Woman Arrested at 2 AM, Livestreamed to Millions

Family Drama Unfolds as Woman Arrested at 2 AM, Livestreamed to Millions

POLICE CAME THROUGH MY DOOR AT THIRTEEN MINUTES TO TWO IN THE MORNING AND MY SISTER LIVESTREAMED THE ARREST TO A MILLION PEOPLE. AT THE STATION THE BOOKING OFFICER READ MY FILE AND PUSHED HIS CHAIR BACK.

You're under arrest in connection with fraud relating to an estate.

My sister had her phone up before the officer had finished the sentence.

She got my face. And the door frame. And our mother and father stood out on the landing behind the officers, both of them smiling.

She was live. About four hundred thousand followers, and the number on that stream went past a million before I was in the van.

And she kept checking the comments while her sister was being handcuffed in a bedroom.

I didn't argue. I didn't ask what the grounds were. I put my hands out.

And the cuffs went on, and my mother's face did a thing I'll be looking at for the rest of my life.

I'm thirty-two. I stood in a wrecked bedroom at ten to two in the morning while the people who've known me since the day I was born treated it like an occasion.

What I remember isn't the metal. It's how certain all three of them looked.

Chapter 1: The Midnight Arrest

Three months before that, we were round a table at a solicitor's office for my grandfather's will.

He barely looked at me while he was going through it.

And then he read out that my grandfather had left the whole of the trust to me.

Nobody said anything. My father went completely still. My sister looked at our mother, and our mother's face changed into one I've known since I was about nine.

And then the solicitor kept reading — and there's a clause in that will about what happens if I'm found to lack capacity.

He slowed down over it. I noticed that at the time and I didn't understand it until about eleven weeks ago.

And my mother put her hands on that table and said: she does not deserve that money. We'll have to do something.

With me sitting four feet away.

My father nodded. My sister looked at our mother again.

And the man employed to explain a dead man's wishes to a room looked down at his papers.

I didn't say anything. I got up and went home.

They took that for weakness, which is what people do, and which is generally fine with me.

But it was the start of something that would change everything.

Chapter 2: The First Signs of Trouble

Four weeks later my bank rang me about attempts on my accounts from a network they didn't recognise.

I told them to leave everything running exactly as it was.

Then I started getting the feeling. That somebody knew when I went out and when I came back and how long for.

So I put two small cameras in. Front room and the office.

And four days later I was having lunch and got an alert — and watched my sister let herself into my house with a key off.

The video was crystal clear. She moved with a familiarity that chilled me to the bone. She went straight to my desk, pulled out a drawer, and took out a stack of documents. She sorted through them quickly, her face a mix of determination and satisfaction.

Before she left, she replaced the documents and locked the drawer. She made sure everything was exactly as she found it, but the damage was done.

I knew then that I had to act. But what could I do? My family was against me, and the evidence was mounting.

Chapter 3: The Hidden Truth

The next few weeks were a blur of meetings with lawyers and private investigators. I was trying to piece together what my family was up to, but every lead seemed to lead to a dead end.
