Discovering My Husband’s Hidden Life: The Day Everything Changed at the Hospital

Searching for Clues
I placed the paper bag on the counter slowly. The weight of Vanessa’s name pressed down on me, thick and suffocating. “Where is his office?” I asked, forcing the words past clenched teeth.
“Uh, down the hall, second door on the left,” Emily stammered, her facade of professionalism cracking. I didn’t wait for her to finish. My heels clicked down the linoleum floor as I wove through the maze of nurses and patients.
Inside Nathan’s office, the air smelled of antiseptic and something floral, the remnants of a bouquet someone had left behind. I scanned the room, desperate for anything that would explain this Vanessa and her cryptic ties to my husband. I rifled through papers on his desk, heart pounding like a drum.
Amidst the clutter, a file caught my eye — it was marked “L. Monroe.” A chill raced down my spine. I tugged it free and flipped it open. A patient history lay sprawled across the pages, but more troubling were the notes scribbled in the margins, cryptic phrases like “discrepancies” and “urgent follow-up needed.”
What was Nathan hiding? I hadn’t come here for a mere lunch drop-off. I needed to know what Vanessa was to him, and this file felt like a key.
“C’mon, Nathan, where are you?” I whispered, glancing toward the door, half-expecting him to walk in at any moment. I could feel time slipping away as the reality of the situation twisted in my gut.
Confronting Nathan
When I finally found Nathan in the cafeteria, he looked up, startled. “What are you doing here?” he asked, his voice strained.
“We need to talk,” I stated, laying the missing file on the table between us. “What’s going on with Vanessa?”
His eyes darted nervously. “It’s just a misunderstanding,” he replied too quickly, leaning back in his chair. But his body was rigid, betraying him.
“A misunderstanding? She signed in as Mrs. Pierce,” I pressed, the words tasting bitter on my tongue. “You can’t brush this off. It’s serious, Nathan.”
He rubbed his temple, a telltale sign of his discomfort. “Look, you don’t understand—she’s just someone I worked with. It’s nothing.”
“Nothing? You were supposed to be my husband, Nathan. What else are you hiding?” My pulse raced, every word falling heavier between us.
Just as I was about to press him further, his phone buzzed loudly on the table. “I need to take this,” he murmured, his voice flat, eyes fixated on the screen.
I watched him step away, the phone pressed to his ear. I clenched my fists, the anger boiling just beneath the surface. This wasn’t over.
As I sat in the cafeteria, scanning the room, my gaze landed on the glass window behind Nathan. My heart dropped. Just as Nathan received the phone call, I spotted Vanessa approaching, her silhouette sharp against the sterile light, poised and confident. Panic surged within me as I realized she was about to walk in.
