Unveiling Shadows
The address from Troy's text led me to a bar that looked like it hadn’t seen a fresh coat of paint in decades. I stepped inside, the door creaking ominously behind me. Dim light flickered from a few scattered bulbs, illuminating worn-out stools and sticky tables.
"Mark?" I called out, scanning the room. My heart raced at the thought of confronting Troy’s old friend.
“He’s over there,” the bartender gestured, his eyes wary.
Mark sat hunched over a drink, his face shadowed by a baseball cap. He glanced up, recognition flashing in his eyes before they hardened. “What do you want?”
“I need to talk about Troy,” I said, my voice steady despite the tremor in my hands. “What was he involved in?”
Mark looked around, ensuring no one was eavesdropping. “You don’t want to know,” he muttered, swallowing hard. “Troy was… he had debts. Bad ones. You need to keep your distance.”
My pulse quickened. “Debts? What kind of debts?”
“Gambling. And worse,” Mark replied, his eyes darting nervously.
As he spoke, the weight of his words sank in. “Worse? What do you mean?”
Mark slammed his glass down, rattling the table. “Just forget it. For your own good,” he said, rising abruptly. “You don’t understand what you’re getting into.”
“Mark, wait!” I reached for him, but he was already striding toward the exit. My mind raced with the implications of his words. What had Troy really been involved in? Why hadn’t he ever mentioned it?
But Mark disappeared outside, leaving me alone with a whirlwind of questions and a gut-wrenching sense of betrayal.
Pieces of the Puzzle
Back at home, the silence felt suffocating. I slumped at the kitchen table and spread out Troy’s old bank statements and receipts once more. Each line felt like a dagger, revealing secrets that had been buried beneath layers of fabrications.
Scrolling through the numbers, a name caught my eye—someone I hadn’t thought about in years. It was connected to a sizeable transfer. My heart raced as I realized this person had been lurking in the periphery of our lives.
“What did you do, Troy?” I whispered, dread pooling in my stomach.
Every instinct screamed that this individual had been pulling strings, influencing Troy’s decisions, maybe even manipulating him into a corner. I pressed my fingers against my temples, trying to make sense of the chaotic thoughts swirling in my head.
As I reached for my phone to call this person, eager for answers, it suddenly rang. I startled and grabbed it, heart pounding.
“Hello?” I answered, breathless.
“It’s Troy’s father,” he said, his voice frantic. “You have to stop searching! I know more than I’ve ever let on about his past.”
“What do you mean? What’s going on?” I pressed, desperation clawing at my throat.
“It’s a family secret that—”
Then, silence. The call disconnected, leaving me shaken and desperate for answers.
