“Mom had a relationship before she met Dad. You were born from that relationship.”
Ethan sat down on the couch, looking stunned. “This is a lot to take in.”
“I know. But it doesn’t change anything between us. You’re still my best friend, Ethan. And I still want to go to prom with you.”
He gave me a small smile. “Thanks, Lily. I was worried this would change things.”
“It doesn’t. Let’s go to prom and have the best night ever.”
Chapter 4: The Prom Night
As we drove to the prom, the tension between us began to ease. Ethan’s excitement was contagious, and I found myself smiling more and more. We arrived at the school, and the sight of the decorated gym filled me with a sense of nostalgia.
“Ready?” I asked, holding out my arm.
“Ready!” Ethan beamed.
We entered the gym, and the music flooded my senses. Ethan and I made our way to the dance floor, and the DJ announced the first slow dance. We found a spot and began to sway to the music.
“This is amazing, Lily,” Ethan said, his eyes shining. “I’m so glad we’re here together.”
“Me too, Ethan. I wouldn’t want to be here with anyone else.”
As the night wore on, we danced, laughed, and took countless photos. Ethan’s joy was infectious, and it was clear that everyone in the room was having a great time. But as the evening drew to a close, I couldn’t shake the feeling that there was still something unresolved.
“Ethan, can we talk for a minute?” I asked, leading him to a quiet corner.
He nodded, his expression serious. “Sure.”
“I want to apologize for not telling you sooner. I know it’s a lot to take in, and I should have been more honest with you.”
“It’s okay, Lily. We’re family now, and I’m just glad we’re here together.”
“Thank you, Ethan. You’re the best.”
He hugged me tightly, and I felt a sense of peace wash over me. We were more than friends; we were family.
Chapter 5: The Unforgettable Resolution
After prom, we drove back to my house, still buzzing from the night’s excitement. Mom was waiting for us in the living room, a look of relief on her face.
“How was it?” she asked, her voice trembling with emotion.
“It was amazing, Mom,” I said, giving her a hug. “Ethan and I had the best time.”
Ethan stepped forward and hugged her too. “Thanks for letting us go, Mom. I really appreciate it.”
Mom’s eyes filled with tears. “I’m so glad you both had a wonderful time. And I’m sorry for keeping the truth from you for so long.”
“It’s okay, Mom. We’re all family now,” I said, squeezing her hand.
As we sat down together, the weight of the past seemed to lift. We talked about the night, our memories, and the future. Ethan shared his dreams of becoming a baseball coach, and I told him about my plans to study art in college. For the first time in a long time, we felt truly connected.
“You know, Lily,” Ethan said, his eyes twinkling, “I think we should make a new promise. No more secrets, no more lies. Just us, together.”
I smiled, feeling a warmth in my heart. “I promise.”
And with that, we sealed our bond, knowing that no matter what the future held, we would face it together, as family.
