Airport Confrontation Reveals a Daughter's Hidden Fortune and Family Secrets

Airport Confrontation Reveals a Daughter's Hidden Fortune and Family Secrets
← Previous Part (1) Reading Part 2 of 3

“Complicated is your father’s specialty, darling,” my grandmother, Evelyn, replied, her voice strong despite her age. “What has he done now?”

I explained about the ticket, the taunts, and the private jet. There was a long silence on the other end of the line. “He never changes, does he? Still trying to erase your mother’s memory, to diminish everything she held dear.” Then, her voice lowered. “This isn’t just about a plane ticket, Marlo. It’s about the trust fund. Your mother’s family, the Whitmores, insisted on it. A substantial amount, to be accessed when you turned twenty-five, with a specific condition.”

“A condition?” I asked, my heart pounding.

“Your mother wanted you to know the truth about your grandfather, her father, before you could access the funds. He wasn’t the quiet, unassuming professor everyone believed him to be. He was a brilliant investor, a man who made a fortune in oil in the early days of the Texas boom. And he left instructions that you must understand his legacy, and how it was built, before you could benefit from it.” Evelyn paused. “The lawyers have been preparing you, quietly, for the past few weeks. They’ve sent you documents, haven’t they?” I confirmed, remembering the thick packet of papers I’d barely glanced at, assuming it was just another attempt by my father to control me. My grandmother sighed. “He’ll be furious when he finds out.”

The Confrontation

The town car deposited me at the entrance to the Savannah airport’s general aviation area. As I stepped out, I saw them. My father, Delphine, and Brindle emerging from the main terminal. Brindle, still filming, spotted me first. Her jaw dropped. My father's face was a mask of disbelief. He strode toward me, his usual bluster replaced by a stunned silence.

“What…what is going on here?” he stammered, his eyes flicking between me and the waiting jet. “Who are you trying to impress?”

“I’m not trying to impress anyone, Dad,” I said, my voice surprisingly steady. “I’m simply traveling as my mother intended.” I gestured towards the jet. "Captain Ruiz is expecting me."

Delphine, ever the social climber, finally found her voice. “A private jet? Don’t be ridiculous, Marlo. You couldn’t possibly afford this.”

I smiled, a small, tight smile. “Actually, I can. And it’s all thanks to my mother’s foresight. And a little help from the Whitmore family.” Brindle stopped recording, her usually smug expression replaced with confusion. My father’s face was turning a dangerous shade of red. “What are you talking about?” he demanded, stepping closer. “What Whitmores?” Before I could answer, a voice called out from behind him. “Mr. Cassidy? A word, if you please.” It was a man in a crisp, dark suit – Mr. Rothwell, from the Atlanta law firm.

Secrets Unveiled

Mr. Rothwell approached my father, a polite but firm expression on his face. “Mr. Cassidy, I believe there’s been a misunderstanding. Miss Cassidy is, in fact, the beneficiary of a significant trust fund established by her maternal grandfather, Charles Whitmore. A fund you were never informed of, as Mr. Whitmore specifically requested.”
