After 5 Years of Care, I Overheard My Paralyzed Husband Calling Me a ‘Free Maid’

After 5 Years of Care, I Overheard My Paralyzed Husband Calling Me a ‘Free Maid’
← Previous Part (1) Reading Part 2 of 3

Lucas laughed again. That sound finished me.

I stepped away silently. I didn’t confront him. I didn’t collapse. I left.

That night, when the ambulance brought him home, he was already in bed.

“Where were you?” he snapped. “Did you bring the bread?”

I looked at him, really looked, and saw not a broken man, but a ruler in a wheelchair.

As I adjusted his pillows, I made myself a promise.

I wouldn’t scream. I wouldn’t argue. I would disappear.

But first, I would show him exactly how expensive a “free maid” truly is...

This is PART OF THE STORY.

Marianne Cortez stood frozen behind a concrete pillar, her eyes fixed on the outdoor terrace where her husband, Lucas, sat laughing with another man. She had been carrying a brown paper bag filled with warm sweet bread, his favorite, and had paused to smooth her hair before approaching him. But then she heard his voice, strong and sharp, cutting deep into her heart.

“She’s basically unpaid labor,” Lucas said, his amusement evident. “I don’t pay her, she never complains, and she’s young enough to haul me around all day.” The other man laughed, and Marianne felt her legs turn to ice. She pressed against the pillar, her mind reeling with the words that followed.

A Life of Sacrifice

“I locked that down early,” Lucas continued. “She feeds me, cleans, battles insurance, bathes me. That’s not a wife. That’s full service for free. When I’m gone, my son and my sister get everything. They’re blood. She’s just… there.” Marianne’s eyes stung with tears as she realized the truth. She had given up five years of her life, her youth, her dreams, for a man who saw her as nothing more than a free maid.

She felt a wave of anger and hurt wash over her, but she couldn’t move, couldn’t speak. She was trapped in a life she thought she knew, but now seemed like a lie. And then, just as she thought she couldn’t take anymore, Lucas said something that made her blood run cold...

“And the best part is, she’s too stupid to even realize it,” Lucas said, his voice dripping with contempt. Marianne felt a surge of rage and humiliation, but she still couldn’t move. She was frozen in shock, her mind struggling to process the magnitude of Lucas’s betrayal. The other man laughed again, and Marianne saw red.

A Glimpse of Reality

As she stood there, she began to see her life with Lucas in a different light. She remembered the countless nights she had spent awake, caring for him, nursing him back to health. She remembered the sacrifices she had made, the dreams she had put on hold, the life she had given up. And for what? So Lucas could laugh at her, belittle her, and treat her like a servant?

Marianne’s anger turned to determination. She realized she had a choice to make. She could continue down the path she was on, sacrificing her own happiness and well-being for a man who didn’t appreciate her. Or she could take a stand, fight back, and reclaim her life. But as she turned to leave, she heard Lucas say something that made her heart skip a beat...

The truth was finally coming out — and there was no turning back now… (Continue to Part 3 →)
