Conversations in the Dim Light
Mia shifted on the couch, her fingers nervously tracing the edges of the faded letter she had pulled from her bag. “I grew up with a couple who knew my story,” she began, her voice barely above a whisper. “They always encouraged me to find you.”
I leaned forward, my heart racing. “What do you mean? What did they say?”
“They told me I was adopted, but that my real mother loved me very much. They wanted me to understand that I had a family who—” she paused, a flicker of emotion crossing her face. “A family who never wanted to leave me.”
“They must’ve been wonderful people,” I replied, desperate to understand the weight behind her words. “But did you ever—”
“I always felt different,” Mia interrupted, her eyes shimmering with unshed tears. “Like there was a piece of me missing. It’s hard to explain. I struggled with it every day, an emptiness I couldn’t name.”
I felt a pang of guilt wash over me as I listened. What had I done? The remorse tightened in my chest. “I never wanted that for you... I thought it would be better.”
Then, just as the connection between us began to feel real, Mia mentioned their names—Tom and Rita. My breath caught in my throat. “You knew them?”
“They raised me with so much love,” she said, oblivious to the impact her words had on me. “But it was always about finding you.”
“Tom and Rita... they were my friends,” I whispered, dread settling over me like a heavy blanket. “They kept you from me.”
The Letter and the Figures of the Past
Mia's gaze dropped to the letter in her hands. “I found out they passed away last year. It was like losing them all over again.”
“They left you something?” I asked, a knot forming in my stomach.
She nodded slowly. “A letter. It had all the details about you—your name, your address… everything.”
The words hung in the air, chilling me. They had kept this immense truth a secret from her all along. My hands trembled as the weight of it crashed over me. “Why didn’t they tell you sooner?”
Just then, I heard footsteps echoing from the stairs. Tom's voice filtered into the room, a casual “What’s going on?” sending a spike of panic through me. What if he overheard? What if he knew more?
Mia's expression flickered with uncertainty, her eyes darting toward the door. “I should go,” she started to rise, but then she froze, her face twisting in pain.
“Mia?” I reached out instinctively, my heart racing as she clutched her chest. “What’s happening?”
I screamed for Tom, but all I could focus on was Mia crumpling to the floor, my world threatening to spin out of control. “Call 911!”
