Amelia returned, her face grim. “The guest list confirms Vanessa was at the gala, but the security footage is…incomplete. There’s a two-hour gap where the cameras mysteriously malfunctioned. And the three people she named as witnesses all left early.” Preston’s jaw tightened. He turned to Vanessa, his eyes blazing with fury. "You lied." Vanessa, cornered, finally cracked. “It wasn’t about the affair, Preston! It was about the merger! My father’s company was on the brink of collapse. We needed Hale Industries. You were hesitant, and I knew if you believed Sarah, if you even *questioned* her, the deal would fall through. I…I had to protect my family.” The revelation stunned everyone. Preston had been manipulated, used as a pawn in Vanessa’s family’s desperate bid for financial survival. He stared at Vanessa, his voice barely a whisper. “So you destroyed my marriage, ruined a woman’s life, and deprived five children of a father, all for money?” Vanessa burst into tears, but there was no sympathy in Preston’s eyes. He looked at me, his expression filled with remorse. “Sarah…I…I was a fool.” Micah, the quietest of my children, stepped forward and, to everyone's surprise, offered Preston a small, hand-drawn picture of a superhero. “You look sad, sir,” he said softly.
A New Beginning
Preston knelt down, accepting the drawing with trembling hands. A single tear traced a path down his cheek. “Thank you,” he murmured to Micah, his voice thick with emotion. "This...this is beautiful." He looked at all five of them, truly seeing them for the first time. “I have a lot to learn, a lot to make up for.” He turned back to me, his gaze earnest. “I can’t undo the past, but I want to be a part of their future, if you’ll let me.” I studied his face, searching for any trace of the arrogance that had once defined him. It was gone, replaced by a raw vulnerability I hadn’t seen before. “It won’t be easy,” I said, my voice firm. “They’ve lived ten years without you. They’ve learned to be resilient, to rely on each other. You’ll have to earn their trust.” He nodded, his eyes filled with determination. “I understand.” Vanessa, defeated and humiliated, was escorted away by her family. The atmosphere, though still charged, had shifted. A sense of hope, fragile but present, bloomed in its place. Warren Hale’s funeral, initially a scene of potential conflict, had become a catalyst for an unexpected reunion. As we prepared to leave, Preston walked with us to the SUV, carefully opening the door for Sophie and Grace. “I promise,” he said, looking directly at me, “I will be the father they deserve.” The gray eyes of my children met his, and for the first time, I saw a flicker of recognition, a spark of connection.
