8-Year-Old Scrap Girl Finds Millionaire Begging for Help in Abandoned Fridge

8-Year-Old Scrap Girl Finds Millionaire Begging for Help in Abandoned Fridge
← Previous Part (1) Reading Part 2 of 3

With a groan of protesting metal, the door creaked open. Inside, crammed into the tiny space, was a man. Not a homeless man, not a worker from the landfill. This man wore a tailored suit, ripped and stained with grime, but undeniably expensive. His face was gaunt, his eyes wide with terror. He was… begging. “Please,” he rasped, his voice barely a whisper. “Don’t leave me. They’ll… they’ll come back.” Isabella stared, her mind struggling to process what she was seeing. A millionaire, trapped in a fridge, begging for help? It felt like a twisted dream.

A Man Out of Time

The man’s name was Arthur Penhaligon. Or, at least, that’s what he told Isabella. He kept repeating it, as if trying to convince himself it was true. “Arthur Penhaligon… Penhaligon Investments… you’ve probably heard of it.” Isabella hadn’t. She’d heard of hunger, and cold, and the relentless grind of survival, but not of investments. He was surprisingly polite, even as he shivered uncontrollably. “Thank you, child. You… you saved my life.” She led him, stumbling, away from the refrigerator and into the meager shade of a rusted-out truck cab. He looked… lost. Completely out of place. “Who are ‘they’?” Isabella asked, cautiously.

He flinched. “My… business partners. They… they wanted something I wouldn’t give them.” He refused to elaborate, his gaze darting around as if expecting someone to appear over the mountains of trash. Isabella, despite her initial fear, felt a strange protectiveness towards him. He was helpless. Like a broken doll. She knew what it was like to be helpless. She shared the small piece of stale bread she’d been saving for later. He ate it ravenously, tears welling in his eyes. “You’re a good girl,” he said, his voice thick with emotion. “A very good girl.” Then, he looked at her, a chilling realization dawning on his face. “Wait… how did you find me?”

The Price of Silence

Arthur’s question hung in the air, heavy and unsettling. He wasn’t asking out of gratitude; Isabella saw a calculating glint in his eyes. “I… I heard you,” she stammered, shrinking back. “I was looking for scrap.” He studied her, his gaze lingering on her worn clothes, her calloused hands. “This isn’t a place for a child. Someone must have told you about me.” Isabella shook her head vehemently. “No one! I just… heard a noise.” He didn’t believe her. “Someone wanted me hidden. Someone who knows this landfill intimately. And they wouldn’t have left me with a simple rope.” He reached into his torn jacket and pulled out a small, intricately carved wooden bird.

“This was tucked into my hand. A message. Old Man Tiber, they call him. He runs security for… certain people. If he sent this, they’re already looking.” Isabella had heard stories about Old Man Tiber. A shadowy figure who controlled everything that happened in the landfill. “They’ll pay well to keep my silence,” Arthur continued, his voice low. “And they won’t hesitate to… eliminate loose ends.” He looked at Isabella again, his expression hardening. “I can offer you something. A lot of something. Enough to change your life. Just tell me who sent you.”

The truth was finally coming out — and there was no turning back now… (Continue to Part 3 →)
