At 6, I Promised My Best Friend We’d Go to Prom Together — 12 Years Later, Mom Said I Could Only on ONE Condition

Twelve years later, Ethan remembered every word. By then, we had survived different classes, my parents’ divorce, his endless attempts to teach me baseball, and my first heartbreak. That night, Ethan showed up with ice cream, gave me his heart-melting smile, and announced: “I told you that guy was an idiot.”

So when senior prom arrived at Willowcrest High School in Bellmere, going together didn’t feel like fulfilling some childhood promise out of sympathy. Ethan was my best friend. There was nobody I would rather go with.

That evening, he arrived wearing a suit and bow tie, holding my corsage and grinning like he had just won the World Series. Mom opened the door. The instant she saw Ethan, something changed. Her smile disappeared. For several seconds, Eleanor Bennett simply stared at him. Then she quickly told Ethan I was almost ready and came upstairs.

I was putting on my earrings when Mom entered my bedroom. Then she locked the door.

“You can go to prom with Ethan tonight,” she said. “But only under one condition.”

I laughed. “What? Home by midnight?”

“No.” Her hands were trembling. “You need to hear the truth I should have told you years ago.”

My smile faded. “What truth?”

Mom sat beside me and took both my hands. “About Ethan.” She paused. “And about me.”

My stomach tightened. Tears filled her eyes. Then Mom took a shaky breath... and began talking.

Chapter 2: The Unspoken Truth

Mom’s voice was barely above a whisper. “When you were six, I made a promise to you and Ethan. I promised to always be honest with you, no matter what. But I broke that promise.”

I felt a knot forming in my chest. “What are you talking about, Mom?”

She took a deep breath. “Ethan isn’t just your best friend, Lily. He’s your half-brother.”

The room spun. “What?”

“Before you were born, I had a relationship with a man named David. He was kind and loving, but he had a genetic condition that made it possible for him to have a child with Down syndrome. Ethan is that child.”

I couldn’t process it. “Why didn’t you tell me?”

Mom’s eyes welled up with tears. “I was scared. I didn’t want you to feel different or burdened. I wanted you to have a normal life.”

I stood up, feeling betrayed. “But you kept it from me for twelve years!”

“I know, and I’m so sorry. But now you understand why I’m asking you to go to prom with Ethan. He’s not just your friend; he’s family.”
