A Mother’s Heartbreaking Journey: Her Daughter Asks for a Second Lunchbox

A Mother’s Heartbreaking Journey: Her Daughter Asks for a Second Lunchbox

Mum. Can you do two lunchboxes tomorrow.

The Request

I said what for.

And my daughter said: for my sister.

I want to be honest about the next ten seconds. I didn't cry and I didn't drop anything. What I did was put my hands flat on that table and ask her, in a completely normal voice, what she meant.

Because she knows about her sister. Of course she does. She’s known since she was about four, in the way a child knows. There's a candle on the ninth of March and she’s drawn her about nine times.

So I thought – she’s started school, she’s six, somebody’s asked her if she has brothers or sisters.

And I said her sister’s name back to her, Elara, and asked if that’s who she meant.

And she said: yeah.

And then she said: she’s in Miss Prentice’s. She’s got my face.

I asked her four more questions and I kept my voice exactly where it was for all four, and that is the hardest thing I have ever done. Did somebody tell you that. No. Did you play with her. A bit, at lunch. What did she say her name was.

And she said it. Elara.
