I tightened my hands around the steering wheel. “That wasn’t what I asked.”
Her head turned. For several seconds, she studied me. “You’ve always been strangely observant.”
“I’ve known your son for ten years. Somebody has to notice the things he misses.”
That earned a weak laugh. Then her eyes filled with something she quickly turned away to hide. My stomach tightened. “Karen.”
“I’m fine.”
“You’re terrible at lying.” The rain continued its relentless assault on the windshield. We’d passed the brightly lit shops of Madison Avenue and were now heading into a quieter, more residential part of town. She finally met my gaze, and the sadness in her eyes felt… bottomless. It wasn’t just about a dead car battery.
“It’s just… a lot,” she said, her voice barely a whisper. “A culmination of things.”
“Want to talk about it?” I offered, keeping my voice neutral. I wasn’t sure I wanted to know, frankly. But I couldn't just drop it. Not with Karen.
She shook her head. “Not yet. Could you… could you take me somewhere quiet? Just for a few minutes?”
“Somewhere quiet?” I repeated, glancing at the unfamiliar streets. “Like where?”
“There’s a park… Elmwood Park. It's usually empty this late. Just… somewhere I can collect myself.”
Elmwood Park was a good twenty minutes out of the way. But looking at her, I knew arguing would be pointless. “Alright. Elmwood Park it is.” I shifted gears, a knot forming in my chest. This wasn't a simple jump-start situation. This was something else entirely. Something heavy.
Chapter 1: A Request in the Rain
The park was exactly as she’d described: deserted. The rain had slowed to a drizzle, leaving the air smelling clean and earthy. I parked near the gazebo, killed the engine, and turned to her. She hadn’t said a word since requesting the detour.
“Here we are,” I said softly.
She unbuckled her seatbelt and reached for the door handle. “Thank you, Alex.”
She stepped out into the damp air, pulling her coat tighter around her. I watched her walk towards the gazebo, her shoulders slumped. I hesitated, then followed. She sat on one of the benches, staring out at the dark expanse of the park. I sat down beside her, leaving a comfortable space between us.
“So,” I began, trying to sound casual. “What’s going on?”
She sighed, a long, drawn-out sound that spoke volumes. “It’s… my husband. Robert.”
Robert Mercer was a successful lawyer, a pillar of the community. He and Karen always seemed… perfect. “What about him?”
“He’s… he’s leaving me.” She said it flatly, as if stating a fact. “He’s been seeing someone. For months.”
The news hit me like a punch to the gut. I’d always admired the Mercers, their seemingly solid marriage. “I… I’m so sorry, Karen.”
“He told me tonight. After dinner. Said he needed… ‘space to find himself.’” Her voice cracked on the last few words. “Space. After thirty years.”
“That’s… awful.” I fumbled for something to say, anything to ease her pain. “Daniel hasn’t mentioned anything.”
“Daniel doesn’t know. Robert made me promise not to tell him. Not yet.” She covered her face with her hands, and I saw her shoulders shaking. She was crying, silently, desperately. And I suddenly felt completely inadequate.
Chapter 2: Secrets and Promises
I sat there in silence, letting her cry. What do you say to someone whose world is crumbling? “Do you… do you want me to call Daniel?” I finally asked, knowing she’d probably say no.
She shook her head, her voice muffled. “No. Not yet. He has his finals next week. I don't want to burden him.”
“He’s your son, Karen. He has a right to know.”
“He thinks everything is perfect. I… I want him to have a little longer to believe that.” She looked up, her eyes red and swollen. “Robert wants to announce it publicly next week, with his… friend. He wants to control the narrative.”
“That’s… manipulative.” I said, anger rising within me. Robert Mercer, the respected lawyer, playing games with his son’s emotions.
“He always has been.” She managed a weak smile. “That’s why I agreed to keep it quiet. I just… I needed to tell someone. I needed to be with someone who wouldn’t judge me.”
“You know you can tell me anything, Karen.”
“I do. That’s why I asked you to bring me here.” She paused, then added, almost as an afterthought, “There’s something else.”
“What is it?”
“Robert… he’s been making some bad investments. A lot of bad investments. He’s lost a significant amount of money. And… and he’s been hiding it from me.”
“How much money?”
She hesitated. “Enough to… to jeopardize everything. The house. Daniel’s college fund. Everything.”
My mind reeled. A crumbling marriage, a secret affair, and financial ruin. It was a perfect storm of disaster. And Karen was standing in the middle of it, alone.
Chapter 3: The Weight of Deception
“Has he told anyone else about the money?” I asked, trying to keep my voice steady.
“No. He’s been very careful. He’s been transferring funds to offshore accounts, using shell corporations. It’s… complicated.” She rubbed her temples, looking utterly exhausted.
“This is more than just a messy divorce, Karen. This could be… illegal.”
“I know.” She looked at me, her eyes pleading. “That’s why I’m so scared. I don’t want to be involved. I just want to be left alone.”
“But you can’t just ignore this. You have a responsibility to Daniel. He needs to know what’s happening.”
“I know, I know.” She sighed. “But I need time to figure things out. I need to protect him. And… and I need to protect myself.”
“From Robert?”
She nodded slowly. “He’s a powerful man, Alex. He has a lot of influence. I’m afraid of what he might do.”
Suddenly, her phone rang. She glanced at the caller ID and her face paled. “It’s him.”
She hesitated for a moment, then answered. “Hello?” Her voice was barely audible.
I couldn’t hear the other end of the conversation, but I could see the color draining from her face. Her grip on the phone tightened. After a few moments, she hung up, her hand trembling.
“What did he say?” I asked, my voice filled with concern.
“He wants me home. He said he needs to discuss things. He said… he said he’s willing to make a deal.” Her voice was filled with dread. “A deal, Alex. What kind of deal?”
Chapter 4: A Dangerous Bargain
“I don’t know, but I don’t trust it,” I said immediately. “Don’t go home. Not yet.”
“But what choice do I have?”
“You have me. Let me go with you. Let me be there when you talk to him. You don’t have to face this alone.”
She looked at me, her eyes searching mine. “You’d do that for me?”
“Of course. You’ve always been there for Daniel and me. It’s my turn to be there for you.”
A flicker of hope appeared in her eyes. “Thank you, Alex. I… I don’t know what I’d do without you.”
We drove back to the Mercer house in silence. The rain had stopped, but the air was still heavy with tension. As we pulled into the driveway, I noticed a sleek, black car parked in front of the house. A woman was getting out of it. A strikingly attractive woman, with long blonde hair and a designer handbag.
Robert was standing on the porch, waiting for us. He looked composed, almost smug. He offered Karen a tight smile. “Glad you’re back, dear. We were just about to have a little chat.”
He glanced at me, his eyes narrowing. “And who is this?”
“This is Alex, Robert. A friend of Daniel’s. He was kind enough to give me a ride.” Karen’s voice was surprisingly firm.
Robert’s smile didn’t reach his eyes. “How… thoughtful. Perhaps you’d excuse us. This is a private matter.”
Karen looked at me, a silent plea in her eyes. I nodded. “I’ll be right here,” I said, my voice low. “Just call if you need me.”
She took a deep breath and walked towards the house, Robert and Serena flanking her. As they disappeared inside, I felt a cold dread creep over me. This wasn’t going to be a simple conversation. This was a showdown.
Chapter 5: The Price of Silence
I waited in the car, my hands clenched around the steering wheel. Ten minutes passed, then twenty. The silence was deafening. Finally, the door opened and Karen emerged, her face ashen. Robert and Serena were nowhere to be seen.
“What happened?” I asked, jumping out of the car.
She took a deep breath, her voice trembling. “He… he offered me a deal. He said he’d give me a generous divorce settlement, enough to ensure Daniel’s future, if… if I agreed not to expose his financial improprieties.”
“Blackmail,” I said, my voice tight with anger.
“Yes. And… and he showed me the evidence. Documents proving his illegal transactions. He said if I go to the authorities, he’ll ruin me. He’ll ruin Daniel.”
“Did you accept the deal?”
She shook her head. “No. I told him I wouldn’t be coerced. I told him I was going to the police.”
“Good.” I said, relieved. “That’s the right thing to do.”
“But then… Serena spoke up. She said she knew about everything. She said she’d been helping Robert cover his tracks. And she… she revealed something else.”
Karen paused, her eyes filled with tears. “She said… she said Robert isn’t Daniel’s biological father.”
The revelation hit me like a physical blow. I stared at her in disbelief. “What?”
“Apparently, years ago, before Robert and I were married, I… I had a brief affair. I never told Robert. And Daniel… Daniel is the result of that affair.”
The truth hung in the air, heavy and suffocating. Robert hadn’t just been protecting his money; he’d been protecting a decades-old secret. A secret that would shatter Daniel’s world. A secret
