A Husband’s Final Gift: A Heartbreaking Promise Kept After Loss and Organ Donation

A Husband’s Final Gift: A Heartbreaking Promise Kept After Loss and Organ Donation

Mark and I had been married for three years when I finally became pregnant with the baby we had always wanted. Our happiness lasted only six months. Then Mark learned about his illness. The doctors gave him no more than three months to live. He probably wouldn't live long enough to meet our daughter.

That evening, he settled beside me on our porch with one hand resting on my belly. "If my organs are still healthy enough when the time comes, I want them donated," he said, his voice steady but his eyes filled with unshed tears.

"Please don't talk about dying while she's kicking," I whispered, my voice breaking. "That's exactly why I have to," he replied, his gaze never leaving my stomach. "If I can't watch her grow up, maybe I can at least make sure somebody else gets more time with theirs."

Mark grew weaker much faster than we expected. By my eighth month, I was helping him button his shirts and pretending not to notice when he had to stop halfway to the bathroom just to catch his breath. A few weeks before he died, Mark began asking to speak to his doctor alone. I never understood why.

Whenever I asked what they discussed, he would only squeeze my hand and say, "There's something I need to arrange. Please trust me." It was unlike him to keep anything from me, especially then. But he was strangely firm about it. So I let him do it.

He passed in the hospital with my hand wrapped around his. Afterward, I signed the final donation papers with tears dripping onto the page. I remembered that Mark wanted this. I had to honor his final wish, even though doing so caused me unbearable pain.

As I was leaving the hospital, his doctor hurried after me, his face pale. He was holding something behind his back so I couldn't see it. "Wait! Please, wait!" Something in his voice made me stop. "Mark gave me this three weeks ago," he said. "He was very specific. You weren't supposed to see it while he was alive."

The Envelope's Secret

The doctor handed me a sealed envelope, his hands trembling slightly. "He said you must open this alone," he added, his voice barely above a whisper. I nodded, my heart pounding in my chest. I took the envelope and walked out of the hospital, the weight of it pressing against my hand.

Back at home, I sat on the couch, the envelope in my lap. My fingers traced the edges, feeling the thickness of the paper. I hesitated for a moment, then tore it open. Inside was a letter, written in Mark's neat, familiar handwriting.

"My dearest Emma,

I know this letter will bring you pain, but I hope it will also bring you some comfort. I want you to know that I love you more than anything in this world. I've always known that my time was limited, and I wanted to make sure I could do something meaningful, even after I'm gone.

I've arranged for something special. I can't tell you what it is, but I promise it will make a difference. I want you to trust me, as you always have. I will be watching over you and our little girl, and I will always be with you in spirit.

With all my love, forever and always,

Mark"

Tears streamed down my face as I read the letter. The doctor's words echoed in my mind. What could Mark have possibly arranged? I decided to trust him, just as he had asked. I placed the letter in a drawer and went to prepare for the next day.
