I Thought My Dating Life Was Bad Until My Daughters Gave Me a Note That Shocked Me

I Thought My Dating Life Was Bad Until My Daughters Gave Me a Note That Shocked Me Save

Every Man I Dated Disappeared After Meeting My Daughters

It started as a pattern I tried to ignore, then as a mystery I could no longer pretend was coincidence.

Three dates in as many weeks. Dinner, laughter, plans for the weekend. I never hid Lily, twelve, or Maya Jr., eight. I whispered their names at the table, talked about school projects and bedtime stories.

Then I brought them to the restaurant. Their polite smiles, their gentle curiosity—nothing out of the ordinary.

By morning the men vanished. One stopped replying, another claimed an impossible work emergency, the third blocked me before I could ask why.

I stared at my phone, at the empty seat beside me, and wondered if I was cursed, or if my daughters were somehow driving them away.

“Maybe it’s the timing,” I told Daniel, my coworker of three years, as we ate lunch in the break room. “Maybe I’m introducing them too soon.”

He raised an eyebrow, his coffee steam curling like a question mark. “You want me to… what? Play boyfriend?”

I nodded, feeling both ridiculous and desperate. “Just for one night. I’ll introduce you as someone I’m dating. I need to see what happens when I step out of the room.”

He laughed, then grew serious. “You think the girls are doing something when we’re not here?”

My throat tightened. “Exactly. I need a controlled experiment. If something changes when I’m gone, we’ll know it’s not me.”

He smiled, a thin, reassuring line. “Alright. I’ll be your fake boyfriend. Just… tell me what to say.”

I rehearsed the introduction, the small talk about work and dogs, the excuse to fetch dessert. The plan felt absurd, but the alternative was endless emptiness.

That Friday, I dialed his number, heart thudding against my ribs. “You ready?” I asked, voice barely above a whisper.

“Ready as I’ll ever be,” he replied, and I could hear the faint buzz of the hallway lights flickering behind him.

Daniel Enters the House, and the Dinner Begins

He knocked, his shoes making a soft thud on the porch, and I opened the door with a practiced smile.

“Hey, Daniel,” I said, pulling him inside. “Thanks for doing this.”

He nodded, eyes scanning the living room where Lily was perched on the couch, her legs crossed, and Maya Jr. was coloring at the kitchen table.

“Maya, this is Daniel. He’s… uh, someone I’m seeing,” I introduced, feeling my cheeks flush.

Lily looked up, her dark eyes locking onto his for a heartbeat longer than a glance should last. She smiled politely, but her gaze held a weight that made Daniel’s smile falter.

Maya Jr. giggled, waving a crayon‑smudged drawing at him. “Hi Daniel! Do you have a dog?” she asked.

“Just a cat,” Daniel replied, chuckling. “But I love dogs.”

We moved to the dining room. The table was set with pasta, a simple tomato sauce, and a crusty loaf of bread. I poured wine, the amber liquid glinting in the overhead light.

“Everyone, please, sit,” I said, pushing my chair back. “I’ll be right back for dessert.”

Daniel took his seat, his fork already twirling noodles. Lily’s eyes never left his face, her fingers drumming a silent rhythm on the wood.

Maya Jr. chimed in, “Can I have extra sauce, Daniel?” He smiled, “Of course, sweetheart.”

I slipped out, pretending to check the freezer for ice cream, the hallway echoing with the faint click of the pantry door.

Behind me, the house settled into a low hum. The lights above the dining table flickered once, twice, then steadied.

When I returned, the scene had shifted. Daniel’s fork was clenched so hard his knuckles were white.
