Boarding the Secret Flight

I slipped into the gift‑shop aisle just as the automatic doors whooshed shut behind us.

Leo clutched my hand, his small fingers gripping the strap of his tiny backpack like a lifeline.

"Are we really doing this?" he whispered, eyes darting to the rows of sweaters.

I nodded, feeling a thrill surge through my chest—this was our little rebellion, our surprise for Reginald.

The scent of fresh cotton and cheap perfume swirled around us, masking the metallic clang of the boarding gates.

We tucked the tickets into our pockets, heartbeats syncing with the low hum of the aircraft’s engines.

When the flight attendant called for the last group, I slipped past the line, Leo’s excitement bubbling over.

He squeezed my shoulder as we settled into the narrow seats near the back, his elbows digging into the fabric.

From the window, the runway stretched like a silver ribbon, and I imagined Reginald’s grin when he saw us.

For a moment, the world narrowed to the soft rustle of the cabin, the distant chatter of other passengers, and the secret we’d been keeping.

Leo’s gaze flicked to the overhead bins, then to me, his smile wide and unguarded.

We were invisible, hidden in plain sight, and the thrill of the covert plan made my pulse race.

The Announcement

The cabin lights dimmed as the plane taxied, and the soft whirr of the turbines filled the air.

Leo’s eyes widened, his curiosity still unquenched, as a voice crackled through the speakers.

“Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking,” Reginald’s tone floated over the intercom, calm and familiar.

“We have a very special passenger on board today.”

Leo’s smile froze; his hand tightened around mine, knuckles white.

“A very special passenger?” he murmured, his voice barely audible over the hum.

I leaned forward, trying to catch any hint of a joke, the tension in my chest knotting tighter.

“Allow me to introduce Dr. Evelyn Hart,” Reginald announced, his words crisp, his pride barely concealed.

The name hung in the cabin like a sudden gust, stirring the air.

Leo stared at me, his eyes wide, his mouth forming a silent question.

All around us, flight attendants turned their heads, eyes flicking toward the front of the cabin.

There, near the bulkhead, sat a lone woman in a wheelchair, her face turned slightly toward the ceiling lights.

The camera of my mind focused on her, the unexpected presence shocking the quiet hum of the flight.

Confrontation in the Arrival Hall

When the doors hissed open, I clutched Leo’s hand tighter than ever.

“Reginald!” I shouted, voice cracking as the crowd poured past.

He turned, his pilot’s crisp uniform suddenly a uniform of accusation.
