I Walked Out With My Daughters, Knowing He’d Soon Lose Everything He Thought He Owned

I Walked Out With My Daughters, Knowing He’d Soon Lose Everything He Thought He Owned Save

The Ink Was Still Wet

Minutes after our divorce, my ex stared at me across the polished walnut desk.

“Keep the girls, Claire. I’ve got a son coming now,” he said, his voice flat as the courtroom air.

I didn’t flinch. I slipped the pen from my pocket, signed the final papers, and let the clerk hand me the thick bundle.

My attorney, Ms. Alvarez, gave me a brief, reassuring smile.

“Just one more thing,” she whispered, sliding a freshly printed clause across the table. “Your ex’s lawyer added a full‑ownership clause for the condo and the Range Rover—your name, sole title.”

A cold rush of triumph flickered through me. I glanced at the keys lying on the desk, the metallic glint catching the fluorescent light.

“You sure about that?” I asked, voice low.

She nodded, eyes steady. “All yours now.”

I tucked the keys into the inner pocket of my blazer, feeling the weight of metal against fabric, the promise of freedom humming under my skin.

Outside the courtroom, the black Mercedes was already waiting, its engine humming like a patient heart.

Shuttle to O’Hare

The private shuttle hissed its doors open at the courthouse steps, and the girls hopped in, clutching their small backpacks.

“Mom, are we really going to Ireland?” Lily asked, eyes wide.

“We’re going wherever we want,” I replied, watching the city blur past the window.

When we arrived at the airport, a stewardess in navy blue approached, her badge catching the fluorescent glow.

“Ladies, just a heads‑up,” she said, voice low, “there’s a sudden flight embargo on anyone traveling with minors from this state. We’re still figuring out the details.”
