I Held My First Love’s Last Days, Then an Unknown Stranger Gave Me the Letter That Revealed Her Secret Reason for Returning

I Held My First Love’s Last Days, Then an Unknown Stranger Gave Me the Letter That Revealed Her Secret Reason for Returning Save

Willowcrest Courthouse, Again

I pushed the courthouse doors open and the scent of old oak and polished brass hit me, a reminder of that quiet morning when Mara’s smile had seemed like a fragile sunrise.

The hallway was empty, the echoes of our hushed vows still lingering in the vaulted ceiling.

“I never imagined I’d be back here,” I whispered to the empty space, the memory of her trembling hand against mine vivid.

The marble tiles felt cold under my shoes, each step a reminder of the five days that had stretched between love and loss.

My phone buzzed, startling me. An unknown number flashed on the screen.

“Do not open the envelope before midnight,” a voice rasped, static humming behind the words.

I stared at the screen, heart hammering. “Who is this?” I asked, but the line went dead, leaving only the echo of my own breath.

I slipped the envelope back into my coat pocket, the paper soft against the fabric, and left the courthouse, the weight of the warning settling like a stone in my gut.

The world outside was bright, the spring air crisp, but a chill ran down my spine as I headed home.

Polaroids and a Knock at Midnight

At my kitchen table, the envelope lay like a promise and a threat combined.

I waited until the clock struck twelve, the house silent except for the ticking of the old wall clock.

With trembling fingers, I peeled it open.

Inside, a stack of Polaroid photos slipped out, each glossy square capturing Mara’s face beside a man I didn’t recognize.

One showed a sun‑drenched beach in Bali, dated 2014; another, a snowy street in Prague, 2017. Every caption was handwritten, the ink slightly smudged.

“Who is he?” I muttered, the images blurring as my eyes watered.

A sudden knock shattered the stillness.

I opened the door to a woman in black, her coat dripping with rain, a hard‑shelled suitcase at her feet.

“Hand over the photos,” she demanded, her voice low, eyes flicking to the envelope in my hand.

I stared, breath caught, the weight of the envelope suddenly heavier.

Before I could answer, sirens wailed in the distance, growing louder.

She stepped back, her silhouette merging with the night, and vanished as the police lights flickered on the street.

All that remained was the echo of her words and the unanswered questions pressing against my chest.

Section 3: Confronting the Police

I drove to the precinct with the envelope still trembling in my pocket.

Inside, the fluorescent lights buzzed over a row of tired desks. A sergeant with a silver badge looked up as I approached.
