I Walked Into His Gala After He Burned My Dress, Ready to Reveal the Woman He Never Knew Existed

I Walked Into His Gala After He Burned My Dress, Ready to Reveal the Woman He Never Knew Existed Save

Confrontation in the Hallway

Adrian’s coat hung on the rack, still warm from the hallway heater, while the charred remnants of my dress lay like a blackened confession on the bedroom floor.

“You burned it,” I said, voice trembling like the flame that had devoured the silk.

He stared at me, eyes flickering between guilt and calculation. “I told you why.”

My heart hammered against my ribs. “Because I’d embarrass you? Because you think I don’t belong in that room?”

He swallowed, the silence stretched, then the faint buzz of his phone cut through the tension.

“Vanessa’s downstairs,” he muttered, thumb hovering over the screen.

I lunged toward the dresser, fingers brushing the cracked glass of the lamp, and pulled an envelope hidden beneath a stack of old receipts.

It was plain white, no return address, a hotel reservation stamped in elegant script: Midnight – The Grand Marlowe Suite.

My breath caught. “A midnight rendezvous?” I whispered, the words tasting like acid.

Adrian’s jaw tightened. “You shouldn’t read what isn’t yours.”

“Then why hide it?” I pressed, feeling the paper’s smooth edge against my palm, a promise of something I could finally use.

He turned, shoulders rigid. “I’m leaving.”

“And you think I’ll just sit here and watch you disappear into the night with her?” I snapped, the envelope now a weapon in my hand.

His expression cracked, a flash of something that might have been fear. “You’re making a mistake.”

“No,” I said, voice steady. “You’re the one who’s been making every mistake.”

Escape to the Cab

I snatched the torn fabric, its blackened edges still smoldering faintly, and hurled myself down the stairs, the house echoing with every rapid footfall.

Outside, the night air hit me like a cold splash, the city lights flickering in a rhythm that matched my racing pulse.

“Cab!” I shouted, waving my arms, the words breaking through the drizzle of rain that had begun to fall.

A yellow sedan screeched to a halt, its driver’s eyes reflecting the streetlamps as he lowered the window.

“Where to?” he asked, voice low, professional.

“The Royal Monarch’s private entrance,” I snapped, thrusting the envelope toward him. “And step on it.”

He glanced at the paper, then at the torn dress clutched in my fist, a silent acknowledgment of the urgency.

The cab lurched forward, tires humming over wet pavement, the cityscape blurring into streaks of neon.

We turned onto the boulevard that led to the gala’s side gate, the building looming like a stone beast against the night sky.

As we pulled up, the driver’s hand slipped the door open with a metallic sigh.

I slipped inside, the backdoor swinging shut behind me with a decisive clang.

Just then, a distant siren wailed, its mournful cry cutting through the night, hinting that someone was already on my trail.

Inside the Grand Ballroom

My forged invitation glinted silver in the dim hallway light, a thin lie that the guard’s eyes barely skimmed.
