Strangers, a Tire, and a Race Against Time
“It’s fine,” Michael said, already heading for the back of the car. “I’ve got it.”
He opened the trunk and felt a flicker of hope. A spare tire lay nestled among a few designer bags. “You’ve got this, just take a breath,” he muttered to himself.
As he worked on the tire, he glanced at the woman. “I’m Michael, by the way. Just trying to lend a hand.”
“Thank you, Michael. I’m Claire,” she said, her voice steady but edged with tension.
Michael could see her worry in the way she clutched her stomach lightly, the elegant fabric of her dress contrasting sharply with the dirt of the roadside.
“A CEO in a situation like this? You must be in a rush,” he said, tightening the lug nuts.
“Yes, a very important meeting. But I guess you could say I’m in a bit of a fix,” she replied, forcing a smile.
The air around them felt charged with urgency, the ticking seconds closing in like a storm. Michael focused on the task, the rhythmic clink of metal grounding him. “Almost done,” he said, feeling both the weight of her situation and his own.
He finished securing the tire and stood up, wiping his hands on his jeans. Claire’s eyes sparkled with a mix of relief and gratitude.
“I can’t thank you enough, Michael. But I really need to go.”
“Right, yeah—of course,” he replied, his heart racing as he looked at his watch. 7:55 a.m. He had to move. “Safe travels!”
“And you too! I hope I can repay this somehow!”
“No need—just glad I could help,” he said, but the words felt hollow under the weight of the clock.
A Message That Could Ruin Everything
Just as Claire expressed her gratitude, Michael’s phone buzzed violently in his pocket. Heart sinking, he pulled it out, glancing at the screen.
“Michael—where are you? You’re late. This is serious.”
His stomach twisted. “Just a few minutes more,” he whispered to himself, feeling the pressure in his chest tighten.
“Is everything okay?” Claire asked, noticing his change in demeanor.
“I, um… just getting a text from my boss,” he admitted, trying to sound casual. But the weight of his job security hung like a noose around his neck.
Claire’s brow furrowed with concern. “You’re not in trouble, are you?”
He sighed, feeling exposed. “Maybe. I just really… can’t afford to lose this job.”
Suddenly, a loud honk erupted from a passing car, a blaring warning that shattered the moment. Michael jumped, his phone slipping from his grasp.
“No!” he shouted, reaching for it, but it fell to the ground with a sickening crack.
As he knelt to pick it up, dread washed over him. The screen went blank. “Please, no…”
All he could feel was a chilling realization wrapping around his throat, tightening as he looked at Claire, who watched with concern. He felt the impending doom of his job slipping through his fingers.
