I Remember the Day I Finally Walked, Water Splashed Around My Crutches, and My Father’s Tears Became My Strength

I Remember the Day I Finally Walked, Water Splashed Around My Crutches, and My Father’s Tears Became My Strength

Steadying the Crutches

“Don’t tell Daddy yet,” I whispered, clutching the wet handles of my crutches as the water swirled around my ankles.

The boy in the red shirt leaned close, his voice barely a breath over the splash: “Try one more time.”

My fingers tightened, the metal slick with droplets, and I felt the chill seep into my bones.

“Just feel the water,” he urged, his chin brushing the stone, eyes bright with a reckless hope.

Behind the doorway, Daniel stood, the doorway framing his shoulders like a painting. His gaze flicked between my trembling hands and the basin.

“Emily,” he murmured, voice trembling, “you can do this.” The words cracked, barely audible over the soft lapping.

I inhaled the scent of jasmine and damp stone, my heart hammering against my ribs.

“You’re steady,” the boy said, his hand pressing lightly on one crutch, as if to anchor me.

Daniel’s face shifted, hope and fear tangled like vines, his eyes glistening with the first hint of tears.

I nodded, feeling the weight of his stare, the boy’s grin, and the water’s cold promise.

The First Step

I lifted my right foot, the tip of my shoe skimming the water’s surface.

It surged up my calf, a sudden, icy shock that stole my breath and made me gasp.

For a heartbeat I swayed, the crutch wobbling, the stone slick beneath the splash.

“You’re doing it,” the boy shouted, his voice cracking with excitement.

Then, as if the water itself pushed me forward, I placed my foot on the stone, the cold biting my skin.

The world tilted; the water splashed around my ankle, the stone steady under my sole.

Daniel’s shoulders rose, a silent sob escaping his throat, tears streaming down his cheeks.

The boy’s grin widened into a triumphant flash, his eyes shining like sunrise on water.

Suddenly, a deafening crack ripped through the far wall, sending a shiver of dust across the courtyard.

A hidden doorway yawned open, darkness spilling out, a narrow passage swallowing the light.

Crack in the Stone

The air snapped with a sudden, sharp crack that echoed from the far wall.

Dust spiraled like tiny ghosts, landing on the boy’s red shirt and on Emily’s damp dress.

Emily’s crutches clattered as she swayed, the water sloshing over the stone.

“Did you hear that?” the boy whispered, eyes wide, pointing toward the fissure.
