Crossroads

The restaurant felt too small, the air too hot. I needed air, a moment to breathe, to think. “I can’t do this here.”

David’s eyes narrowed. “You’re not going to leave. Not now.”

“Watch me.” I stood, the chair scraping against the tile, and fled into the crisp night.

The parking lot was still, the faint hum of traffic echoing in the distance. My thoughts raced, each one colliding into the next. What if he really believed I was losing it? What if Marcus was his only witness?

As I approached my car, I noticed a figure leaning against the hood. My heart dropped into my stomach. It was Marcus. “What the hell are you doing here?”

“I had to find you.”

I glanced back toward the restaurant, unsure if David had followed me. “What do you mean?”

“I overheard him talking on the phone.”

A chill cascaded down my spine. “What did he say?”

“He told someone to meet him at your cabin. That he needed a final report on you.”

“He’s planning something.”

Every muscle in my body stiffened. I pulled Marcus aside, the shadows wrapping around us like a cloak. “I thought you’d stopped working with him.”

“I tried, but I think he knew I was done. I overheard something he didn’t think I would.”

“What do you mean?” My voice dropped, urgency spilling over.

He hesitated. “He said if I didn’t give him what he wanted at the cabin, he’d make sure I ended up in the system.”

“What?” My heart raced. “He’s threatening you now?”

“He’s a doctor, Rachel. He has connections. You need to be careful.”

“No, you need to be careful,” I said, my mind spinning. “I could go to the police, but…”

Marcus shook his head. “No. He’ll find out.”

Game of Shadows

Returning to the restaurant, I felt the tension coiling again in my gut. I needed to face David, but this time everything was different. I had Marcus’s information, and I couldn’t let David put his plan into action.

As I stepped back inside, I was struck by the normalcy of the diners around us, oblivious to the chaos unraveling just a few tables away. David was now on the phone, eyes darting around. My heart sank. He was in full control mode.

“You need to listen to me,” I said, approaching him. “We’re leaving here.”

He looked at me, surprised. “What are you talking about?”

“No more lies. No more games.”

“Rachel, you’re overreacting.”

“Am I?” I leaned closer, lowering my voice. “You think keeping secrets is keeping me safe? You’ve already made it worse.”

David’s expression hardened. “You don’t know what you’re asking for.”

“What do you mean?” My voice grew louder, and I caught the attention of a nearby couple.

“You’re not ready to hear the truth.” He dropped his voice, urgency creeping in. “You’re going to ruin everything if you push this.”

I took a step back, the ground shifting beneath my feet. “Everything? What do you mean by everything?”

“You have no idea how delicate this is.”

“Try me!”

Our conversation had drawn the eyes of several diners, their eyes darting between us. I didn’t care. I wanted the truth. “You don’t want to hurt me, do you?”

“You don’t even know what you’re asking.”

His phone buzzed again. He ignored it, eyes fixed on mine. “Trust me.”

In that moment, I realized I was out of options. “I need to go to the cabin.”

“No!” he snapped, low but fierce. “You’re not going back there.”

The story continues…
