The Key to My Father’s Secrets: How I Unearthed a Past I Never Knew Existed

The Key to My Father’s Secrets: How I Unearthed a Past I Never Knew Existed Save

Confrontation at the Door

“Where's my father?” I asked, my voice breaking against the weight of my words. Grace stood there, the door barely ajar, her polished exterior radiating disdain.

“I just told you. Ernest d!ed. Cancer. Fast. Painful. It's over.”

Her words twisted the knife deeper. I glanced past her into the house—everything had changed. The family photos were gone, replaced by decor that screamed wealth and distance. How could she just throw away memories like that?

“And nobody told me? Not even when he was dy?”

She tilted her head, faux sympathy dancing on her lips. “Michael, you were in prison for stealing from your own father. Do you really think he wanted you at his funeral?”

With each syllable, she poisoned my memories. I felt the walls of the house closing in, everything I thought I knew about my family crumbling like dried paint. “I never stole anything from him.”

“That's what you said at your trial. Look where that got you.”

Bitterness pooled in my throat. Even Ian’s presence felt tainted; his crooked grin now a mocking reminder of the sibling bond that had never existed.

“Let me in,” I pleaded, desperation clawing at my insides. “I just want to see his room.”

“His room doesn't exist anymore. I remodeled everything.”

I wanted to scream, to shatter her icy facade, but instead, I tightened my grip on the straps of my backpack. This was no longer my home. It felt like an alien landscape, devoid of warmth.

Return to the Cemetery

Stumbling away from the house, I felt the ground shift beneath my feet with every step. The air outside was heavy, filled with the scent of rain and regret. The cemetery was only a black dot in the distance, but my heart raced as I made my way back.

The groundskeeper was still there, his hands dirty from digging, but the moment he caught sight of me, he moved toward me, a knowing look in his eyes.

“You were looking for something, weren't you?”

I nodded, unable to find my voice. “I need to know where my father is buried.”

His expression softened. “He’s here, son. But there’s something else you should have.”

Before I could ask, he handed me an old key, its surface rough against my palm. “This key opens a room in your father's house,” he said, lowering his voice as if the night could hear us. “A room he kept hidden. Go find it.”

Hope ignited in my chest like a flame, but confusion wrapped around it like fog. “Why didn't anyone tell me about this?”

“Some things are meant to be discovered.” His eyes searched mine, as if gauging my resolve. “You need to go before it’s too late.”

As I turned to leave, adrenaline surged through me. What could be hidden behind that door? I raced back to the house, the key clutched tightly in my fist.

With trembling fingers, I inserted the key into the lock, heart pounding as I pushed the door open. What lay ahead? The darkness inside was alive, and the shadows held whispers of secrets. I stepped into the room, and my breath hitched as I spotted a stash of money neatly tucked away.

But just as I reached out, I heard a noise upstairs—a creak that made my blood run cold. Grace and Ian were coming back home.
