Hidden Truths

Following Rosa through the narrow hallway, I felt the tension pull tight. “Rosa,” I called softly. “What’s going on?” But my voice echoed back, empty.

When we reached the kitchen, the sight shocked me. The window was shattered, glass strewn everywhere, and Rosa stood there, breathing heavily. “It’s happened before!” she exclaimed.

Ava and I exchanged a glance. “What are you talking about?” I demanded, stepping forward.

“Someone’s trying to stop us from finding out the truth. They don’t want you to know about the money or what happened to your father.”

Just then, Ava’s phone buzzed, startling us all. She pulled it out and paled, reading the screen. “Mom,” she said, her voice trembling. “It’s a message from a number I don’t know.”

“What does it say?”

“It says, ‘Stay away from Marina Vale. You don’t know what you’re getting into.’”

My heart sank. Who was threatening us now? I glanced back at Rosa, who was shaking her head slowly, a mix of fear and resolve swirling in her gaze.

“We need to leave. Now,” I said, grabbing Ava’s hand again. But the moment I turned, I caught sight of something on the floor—a piece of paper amidst the glass, half-covered. I crouched down, heart racing.

Ava knelt beside me. “What is it?”

It was a receipt, one that looked familiar somehow. As I unfolded it, an icy breath hit my spine.

“No...” I whispered. It was a bank receipt, dated last week, with my name on it. And the amount… a large deposit. It was money that had been moved. But from where?

Unraveling Threads

Ava’s face fell as she read the receipt. “What does this mean, Mom?”

I could hardly breathe, piecing it together in my mind. “Rosa, do you know anything about this?”

Rosa shook her head, but a flicker of recognition crossed her features. “I have heard whispers… about a new benefactor to the old home. Someone influential.”

“They’re stealing money!” Ava exclaimed, her voice rising. “And they’re using my name?”

I gripped Ava’s shoulder. “We’ll figure this out. But we must be careful—if Daniel got too close to something dangerous, we can’t let anyone know we’re looking.”

The sense of urgency pulled us, but fear wrapped tightly around my neck. Who could I trust?

“We need to go,” Rosa urged. “Out the back, quick!”

Without a second thought, we rushed to the back door. I glanced back at the shattered window, realizing how close we were to something dark, something I had never wanted to face. As we stepped outside, the chill wrapped around us like an unwanted whisper.

The story continues…
