Voices of the Past

Then Alyssa’s grandmother—the same woman whose wheelchair I’d freed—pulled Alyssa aside and told her a story she’d never heard: she, too, once chose “security” over love and lived her whole life wondering what might have been.

“Don’t make my mistake,” her grandmother told her. “Regret lasts longer than struggle.”

The next day, Alyssa’s grandmother had a fall and ended up in the hospital. Not serious—just enough to force the family to pause.

I’d come because kindness doesn’t stop being kindness just because life gets complicated.

Our eyes met across the hospital corridor, and everything that pride had built between us started to crumble.

“I investigated,” Alyssa said quickly, breathless. “The job wasn’t arranged. Your friend got you in. Your promotion is yours. You earned it.”

The tension drained from my chest like a balloon losing air.

“Didn’t seem like it when you were being supervised like some pet,” I mumbled, anger slipping away. “I don’t want to be a pawn.”

“You’re not! You’re the best man I know,” she insisted, desperate now. “Not somebody my family can throw away.”

We were standing in a sterile room filled with soft beeping machines and the sterile scent of antiseptic. My head spun with the implications. “Alyssa, I can’t do this if you don’t control your family.”

She stepped closer, her voice low. “Then let me show you I can.”

But as I opened my mouth to respond, an alarm blared, sending us both jumping. A nurse rushed past us, eyes wide, and I instinctively grabbed Alyssa’s arm.

“What’s happening?” I asked, panic rising in my throat.

“It’s Grandma!” Alyssa shouted, already turning back toward the room where her grandmother lay.

Shattered Expectations

We rushed back inside, but by the time we entered, a medical team had gathered around an even more frantically beeping machine. I felt useless as paramedics worked, their faces set in grim determination. Alyssa’s hand clutched at my sleeve, her grip tight with fear.

“Please, no,” she whispered, her eyes trained on her grandmother.

I stayed silent, hardened by the reality of loss. I felt anger, but it was directed at something beyond this moment. My anger was at everything that kept us apart—the barriers of expectation, the family that boxed her in, the life I’d tried to lead to protect both of us from suffering.

When the doctor emerged, his expression somber, Alyssa turned to me, the storm within her eyes begging me to shield her from more pain.

“I’m so sorry,” he started, and everything outside the two of us vanished. “We did everything we could, but…”

“No!” she cried, her voice raw, almost unrecognizable. “Not like this!”

Her world shattered around her in that moment, and in the chaos, I realized something profound. Sometimes, the ties that bind families suffocate more than they protect. When
