My Sister Called to Say Dad Died, But He Was Right Here Stealing My Bacon

Processing the Impossible
I kept expecting Dad to laugh, to roll his eyes and tell me to stop messing with him. “You can’t be serious,” I said, my voice barely above a whisper. How could Rebecca say that? How could he still be here? Dad sipped his coffee, his brow furrowing slightly.
"Does that mean I can take all the bacon?"
The corner of his mouth quirked, but it didn’t reach his eyes. “When did she say it happened?”
“Last night,” I replied, staring into his coffee cup, suddenly nauseous. “Owen found you.”
He shifted in his chair, a flicker of tension passing through his body. “Owen. Yes.” The name hung in the air, heavy with implications. “What did he say?”
“Just that you... you died,” I blurted. A laugh threatened to bubble up, but it caught in my throat. My pulse raced as I watched him, searching for any sign of concern. How could he look so normal? Normal, yet somehow... evasive.
“Did he seem upset?” Dad leaned forward, as if the answer mattered more than my own shattered disbelief.
“Upset? Dad, he thought you were dead!” I snapped, my frustration boiling over. “What happened?”
He shook his head slowly, his expression shifting to something unreadable. “Owen must have been mistaken. It’s not possible.”
“Not possible?” I choked back a laugh. “You’re literally sitting here.”
“And I’m grateful for that,” he said quietly, his eyes searching mine. “But we should talk about Owen.”
A chill ran down my spine. “What about him?”
Dad's face hardened slightly. “There are things you don’t know. Things I didn’t want you to know.”
Confrontation and Secrets
Later that afternoon, I couldn’t help it. I stormed back into the kitchen, where Dad was fidgeting with a dishtowel. “Why didn’t you tell me?” I demanded, my heart racing. “Rebecca’s news—it’s not just some mistake!”
“I didn’t want to worry you,” Dad replied, avoiding my gaze. “I’ve been... managing something.”
“Managing what? How could you keep something like this from me?” I threw my hands up in despair. “What’s the truth?”
His shoulders drooped, and the weight of his secrets hung heavily in the air. “I have a health issue. Something serious. I must have kept it hidden, even from Owen.”
“You mean he knew? He knew you were sick?” I questioned, my mind racing with implications.
“Yes, but...” Dad paused, rubbing his temples, as if the very memory was painful. “Owen and I had our disagreements. He won’t understand.”
Just then, my phone buzzed on the countertop, cutting through the tension. I snatched it up, eyes widening at the name. **Rebecca.**
“What does she want?” I murmured, opening the message.
“You need to know the truth about Owen.”
I felt the floor shift beneath me. What truth? My heart raced as I looked back at Dad, but his eyes were downcast, a storm brewing behind his silence.
“What did she mean?” I pressed for answers, sensing a deeper chasm opening.
Before Dad could respond, the sound of a car engine pulled my attention to the window. My stomach knotted as I saw Rebecca’s car pulling into the driveway. Just as I began to piece together the weight of everything I had just learned, she stepped through the door, her expression grave.
“I found something,” she said, her voice heavy with urgency. “Something that can destroy our family.”
Facing Owen at the Funeral Home
As I pulled into Owen's parking lot, my heart raced. The funeral home loomed like a dark sentinel, its windows dim and uninviting. I stepped out into the cold, feeling the weight of Rebecca’s text settle heavily in my stomach.
Owen opened the door, his eyes red-rimmed and glassy. “Julia,” he said, his voice shaky. “I’m so sorry about your dad.”
“You don’t act like it,” I snapped, stepping closer. “What do you know?”
He stepped back, swallowed hard. “He was my best friend. I... I loved him like a brother.”
“Then why didn’t you tell me the truth?” I pressed, my frustration boiling over. “About what really happened?”
He ran a hand through his thinning hair, glancing around as if the shadows were listening. “There were things… things we chose to keep private. For his sake.”
The words hung heavy in the air. “What things, Owen?” I demanded, feeling the heat of his hesitation. “What was he hiding?”
Owen hesitated, his expression clouded by fear. “We had our reasons. Trust me, some secrets are meant to stay buried.”
But I wasn’t buying it. “Secrets? Or lies?”
Owen flinched. “There were moments... things he told me about how he was feeling, and—”
Suddenly, his voice faltered. “But maybe it’s not my place to say.”
“What are you hiding?” My voice dropped, urgency flooding my tone. “You’re contradicting yourself. Just tell me the truth!”
He paused, clearly battling inner demons. “I don’t know if I can—”
But before he could finish, his phone buzzed in his pocket, and he froze. His face turned pale as he stared into the distance, his breath hitching. “You need to go, Julia.”
Confronting Dad
Driving home felt surreal. The world outside blurred into a haze, my mind racing with Owen’s words. Why was he being so cryptic? What had Dad done to warrant such secrecy? I walked through the door, hoping to find some clarity.
“Dad,” I called out, my voice echoing in the silence. He appeared from the living room, his expression shifting from concern to defensiveness. “You were right. I talked to Owen.”
“What did he tell you?” Dad’s tone was sharp, his eyes narrowing.
“He avoided the truth,” I shot back. “What’s going on? I can feel it between you two. You had a falling out?”
Dad’s jaw clenched. “It was complicated. Owen… he didn’t understand.”
“Understand what? You’re making this worse!” I felt the frustration boiling over. “Why did you keep your health issues a secret?”
“Because I wanted to protect you.” He looked away, guilt etched across his face. “It was for the best.”
But I wasn’t satisfied. “I don’t believe you. You need to tell me everything.”
Before he could respond, a loud crash echoed from the kitchen. We both jumped, but when I turned back to Dad, a storm was brewing in his eyes.
“Julia, there’s something…” He took a deep breath, preparing to explain. But just then, the power went out, plunging us into darkness. Panic surged through me, leaving only the sound of our ragged breaths.
Secrets Unearthed
The living room felt too small as Rebecca paced in tight circles, the old letters clutched in her hand like a lifeline. She tossed one onto the coffee table, and it fluttered open, revealing a name—Owen. My heart raced. “What do you mean he was involved?”
“Dad never told you?” Rebecca asked, disbelief crossing her face.
Dad’s eyes darkened, the shadow of something unspoken lurking in his gaze. “Those letters are meaningless.” His voice was steady, but I could see the tremor in his hands.
“Meaningless? They’re right here, Dad! What were you hiding?” I shot back, each word like a jab.
“You don’t understand!” he snapped, anger flaring, but it didn’t quell the fear creeping into his voice. I felt torn, pulled between sheer betrayal and the love that made me want to protect the man sitting across from me. He had always been my rock.
Rebecca stepped closer, her voice a low whisper. “This goes back years. He and Owen… they were involved in something terrible.”
“You don’t know what you’re talking about,” Dad interjected, raising his hand as if to ward off an accusation.
The tension crackled between us, and just as Dad prepared to explain, the room plunged into darkness. The sudden silence felt suffocating, and I could hear my heart pounding in my ears.
“Dad!” I called out, panic rising in my throat. The power was out, and all that remained was the frantic rustling of clothes and muffled breaths. There was nowhere to hide from the dark.
Confessions in the Dark
As the faint light of a candle flickered to life, a shadow emerged—Dad, his face twisted with something I couldn’t name. “I faked my death,” he finally confessed, the words spilling out like a dam breaking. “I had to escape.”
“Escape from what?” I whispered, dread pooling in my stomach.
“From a past I wish had never happened. Owen and I… we were involved in things that would ruin us both.” His voice cracked, the weight of his admission hanging heavily in the air.
“Involved in what, Dad?” I pressed, feeling the walls of my understanding begin to crumble.
“Criminal activity. It spiraled out of control. When I realized Owen had a choice to make, I thought faking my death was the only way to protect you all.”
My mind raced, the pieces falling into place. All those years, I had seen him as my hero, a man of integrity. And now… everything was a lie. “You lied to us,” I said, my voice barely more than a whisper, choked with disbelief.
He nodded, tears glistening in his eyes. “I thought it was for your own good.”
“For my own good?” I shook my head, reeling. “You think living a lie is better?”
“I didn’t expect any of this to happen,” he admitted, his voice raw. “Not this.”
The candle flickered out, casting us into darkness once more. I was left in a world where nothing made sense, where the man I loved had crafted a reality built on deception. And with that darkness, my heart shattered.
