The Confrontation

Dominic’s gaze flickered to Fiona, and I saw the recognition ignite a fire in his eyes.

“You have no idea what you’re walking into.”

“Actually,” I countered, my voice steady as steel. “I do.”

“How charming,” he said, tightening his grip on my mother’s shoulder. “And foolish.”

“Let her go,” I demanded, stepping forward. Every instinct told me to act, but I needed to keep Dominic talking.

“And if I refuse?” he taunted, glancing back at my mother, who looked ready to cry out but didn’t. “Your father’s elaborate scheme to protect you is amusing, you know. But now it costs him.”

Suddenly, the door swung open behind us, and my team of military police flooded the room.

“Get away from her!” one of them shouted, weapons raised.

Panic spread like wildfire. Dominic’s expression shifted, and in that instant, he released my mother, but it was already too late.

Before I could react, he darted toward a hidden exit. “The game isn’t over, Colonel!” he shouted over his shoulder, his figure disappearing into the shadows.

“Secure the perimeter!” I ordered, adrenaline surging through me. “Fiona, our priority is to locate him!”

But just as quickly as the chaos erupted, it fell silent.

One of my team members turned back to me, horror etched across his face. “Colonel Sinclair,” he stammered, “there’s something you need to see.”

Revelations and Resolutions

They led me to the study, where Dominic had been moments before. On the desk lay a folder I recognized from Unit 17. My heart sank as I flipped it open.

Inside were photographs, meticulously detailed documents tracing years of covert operations. But at the bottom of the folder was a single name that sent a chill down my spine.

“Your father’s other target,” Fiona whispered, the color draining from her face.

“No,” I breathed, my mind racing. “Not her.”

The name was my mother’s. It detailed everything, Dominic’s manipulation of not just my father but me. A plan to eliminate both of them before I could uncover the truth.

“Richard was protecting you from him…and from her,” Fiona said, voice shaking. “He knew she would be next.”

My world spun. “But she would never—”

Fiona hesitated. “It was never about loyalty. It was survival.”

As the pieces fell into place, I suddenly understood the full scope of my father’s plan, and what lay ahead.

Before I could digest this revelation, a sharp beep resonated from the nearby hard drive. A timer counting down began flashing—three minutes.

“He set a trap,” I whispered, the realization crashing over me. “We need to get out, NOW!”

But as we scrambled to exit, a final message pinged on my phone. From my father’s number.

“Trust her. Finish what I started.”

The message sent my heart racing as dread filled the space. I scanned the room for any sign of escape, trapped between loyalty and an inherited destiny that I had to face.

And in that moment, I took a breath, ready to confront whatever lay ahead.
