My Best Friend Married My Sister with Down Syndrome and Hid a Secret That Shattered My Whole Reality

My Best Friend Married My Sister with Down Syndrome and Hid a Secret That Shattered My Whole Reality Save

Marcus’s Hands Tremble

“Elise, before they took her back, Nadia made me promise to tell you something.” The hallway smelled of antiseptic and stale coffee, the fluorescent lights buzzing low.

I clutched the folded paper, its edges soft from years of being hidden. My fingers trembled, matching the faint tremor in Marcus’s voice.

He stared at the floor, the metal jacket creaking as he shifted weight. “She wrote this two years ago.”

The first line was a jagged whisper: “Elise, if you ever find this, know that they didn’t tell you about my arrhythmia.”

My breath hitched. “Arrhythmia?” I asked, voice breaking on the syllable.

Marcus swallowed, eyes flicking to the distant ICU doors. “A rare, fatal one. The doctors kept it secret; they said it would ruin everything.”

In the paper, Nadia’s neat script continued: “It’s called ventricular tachycardia, and it’s… it’s not something they can fix.”

My mind raced, replaying the months of pregnancy, the smiles, the hopeful prayers. “Why would they hide it?” I whispered.

He pressed his palm against mine, the contact cold as the hallway tile. “Because they thought the truth would kill her faster than the disease.”

“And the twins?” I asked, the word feeling like a fragile glass.

Marcus’s eyes widened, a flicker of something I hadn’t seen before—guilt? Fear? “She wanted… she wanted someone to protect them, to be a legal guardian. That’s why she asked me.”

A sudden scream ripped through the corridor, sharp and metallic, jolting us both.

We turned toward the ICU, the sound echoing off the sterile walls.

The ICU Door Bursts Open

“Doctor! No, not yet!” Marcus shouted, lunging forward. I followed, the paper slipping from my grip onto the linoleum.

Inside, the room was a blur of white coats and frantic movement. The monitor beside Nadia’s bed spiked, then flatlined. A harsh, single tone cut the air.

“Clear!” a nurse barked, pushing the gurney toward the hallway. The fluorescent lights reflected off the polished steel, casting ghostly shadows.

Marcus dropped to his knees, his hands hovering over the flatline, then clenching into fists. “Elise, I… I didn’t—” His words were swallowed by the shouting doctors.

One of them, a tall man with a scar across his cheek, stared at the monitor, eyes cold. “We’ve lost her.”

The doors swung wide as more staff rushed in, voices overlapping in a chaotic chorus. “She’s gone!” they cried, the words hanging like a verdict.

My heart pounded, each beat a deafening drum against the silence that followed the alarms.

Marcus stared at the empty bedside, his face a mask of disbelief. “She… she…?” The question hung, unfinished, as the ICU doors slammed shut behind the departing doctors.
