My father’s expression twisted in frustration. “No, Anna, this isn’t the time.”

But I couldn’t back down now. “It is the time. Ethan deserves to know. We’re in this together.”

My father sighed, rubbing his temples like he could massage away the very memories that haunted him. “Ethan… you don’t understand. Anna, you don’t understand.”

“Try me,” I urged.

Ethan tilted his head, still puzzled but torn between wanting to leave and needing to protect me. “What are you talking about?”

“Your last name…,” my father hesitated. “What was your mother’s maiden name?”

“Smith,” Ethan replied, brow furrowed. “Why?”

“Andrew Smith was my business partner, my closest friend. Until…” He swallowed hard, visibly shaken.

“Until what?” I pressed, heart pounding.

“Until I chose my family over him,” he finally admitted. “I took everything from him. And I didn’t know he had a son until now.”

Chill ran through me as I connected the dots. “Ethan… you’re—”

“I’m Andrew Smith's son. The truth will come to light, Anna. Families are never simple.”

Stunned silence enveloped us. I felt my world teeter on a precipice. The marriage that had started as an escape was built on a foundation of betrayal. Ethan met my gaze, uncertainty swirling, but surprisingly, no anger reflected in his eyes.

“So you married me to hurt him?” he asked, voice low, as the shock of revelation settled in.

“No,” I protested. “I did it to free myself.”

“You don’t understand,” my father interjected, desperation seeping into his voice. “I didn’t know… I had no idea.”

“Enough!” I practically shouted, rattled by the sudden chaos of emotions. “This isn’t about you!”
