In the Shadow of My Son’s Marriage: How a Cookout Exposed the Truth I Was Ready to Confront

In the Shadow of My Son’s Marriage: How a Cookout Exposed the Truth I Was Ready to Confront Save

Confrontation Under the Lanterns

“What the hell was that, Sloane?” I said, stepping past the string lights to get closer to her. The laughter of guests faded into the background, replaced by the pulsating thrum of my heart.

Her smile faltered, though she quickly masked it. “It was a joke, Eleanor. You know that.”

“A joke?” I fired back, the warmth from the grill clashing with the chill in my voice. “You dumped my dinner in the dog’s bowl like it was trash!”

“It was a lighthearted moment. People understand humor.” She gestured dismissively, but the nervous glances of our guests betrayed her. My friends, the ones who loved this place as much as I did, looked uneasy.

“Do you even hear yourself?” I said, my voice barely above a whisper. “You’ve turned my home into a stage for your absurd theatrics.”

Grant, still holding his bourbon, stepped in. “Mom, can we not do this here?” His tone was placating, but his eyes told another story. He was choosing her.

“Choosing her? When did you start picking sides?” I demanded, the hurt swelling in my throat. “You were raised here. This is our legacy.”

“It's just a joke, Eleanor—” he began, but the warmth of his eyes had turned to ice. His loyalty shifted like shifting sand, away from me. Sloane glanced at him with a smirk that made my stomach churn.

“A joke,” I echoed bitterly. I turned to my friends, who were whispering amongst themselves. They had seen it, too. Sloane’s transformation, her arrogance; they noticed the subtle changes in her demeanor as if she was shedding an old skin.

“I’ll talk to you later,” I said coldly, ice creeping into my voice. I turned on my heel, desperate to find comfort in my friends, embracing the familiar warmth of their presence.

Confronting Grant in the Boathouse

Once I was alone in the boathouse, I took a deep breath, the smell of varnish thick in the air. I needed to speak to Grant, to reclaim my authority in this tangled family web.

“Grant,” I called, forcing my voice to steady as he walked in, shoving his hands into his pockets. “We need to talk about Sloane’s behavior. She has no respect for our history with Bellhaven Ridge.”

He shifted uneasily, the weight of his silence hanging heavily between us. “I don’t know what you want me to say, Mom.”

“You want me to stand by while she erases everything your father and I built? This isn’t just some property! It’s our family’s legacy!” My heart raced, the walls seemed to close in as I approached him.

“Mom, it’s complicated,” he murmured, avoiding my gaze. “Sloane just wants to make a name for herself.”

I felt an ache deep in my chest. “And you’re allowing that? You don’t see how controlling she’s become?”

Just then, a sound from behind caught my attention. A sharp inhalation. I turned, and there stood Sloane, her expression a mix of fury and disbelief.
