I’m terrified I discovered the secret my son‑in‑law has been hiding from my daughter and myself

I’m terrified I discovered the secret my son‑in‑law has been hiding from my daughter and myself Save

Arrival and First Impressions

My flight touched down in Incheon, and the city’s neon pulse already throbbed through the night air.

Emily greeted me at the arrivals gate, her smile brighter than the airport lights.

“Welcome, Mom! Joon’s waiting for you at the apartment,” she said, hugging me tightly.

We rode a taxi through streets lined with glowing signs, the scent of kimchi and street‑food frying oil drifting through open windows.

Joon opened the door to his modest two‑room flat, his hands full of groceries.

“It’s so good to see you,” he said, his English smooth but his eyes flickering to his phone every few seconds.

Emily led me to the living area, already offering tea.

“Tomorrow we’ll take you to Gyeongbokgung and maybe try some karaoke,” Joon promised, his smile a little too practiced.

While I set my bags down, a small envelope lay half‑hidden behind a stack of plates on the kitchen counter.

My curiosity prickled, but I let it sit. The evening stretched ahead, and I sensed a current of tension beneath Joon’s polite façade.

Dinner with Young‑ho

I began slicing cucumbers and carrots for the appetizers, the knife’s rhythmic click echoing in the quiet kitchen.

Joon’s father, Young‑ho, entered, his presence filling the doorway like a gust of winter wind.

“Good evening,” he said, nodding at Emily and then at me, his gaze lingering on the envelope.

We gathered around the low table, the dishes steaming, the conversation starting with polite chatter about work and weather.

Young‑ho’s voice softened as he spoke of family expectations.

“In our families, honor is everything,” he said, eyes narrowing slightly.

Joon shifted, his fingers tightening around his chopsticks.

“Father, I understand,” Joon replied, his tone forced.

“You must keep what you promised,” Young‑ho whispered, leaning close enough that I could feel the heat of his breath.

“If Emily or her mother finds out what you’ve done, you’ll ruin everything!” Young‑ho shouted, his voice cracking the calm.

The words slammed into the room like a door slamming shut.

I froze in the doorway, heart pounding, as the table erupted in stunned silence.

Confrontation in the Living Room

I stood at the edge of the table, the clink of cutlery still echoing in my ears.

“Joon, what did you say to your father?” I asked, voice barely steady.

He swallowed, eyes darting to the dim glow of the streetlights through the window.

“It’s nothing you need to worry about,” he muttered, his fingers tightening around his glass.

“It wasn’t ‘nothing’,” I pressed, feeling the heat rise in my throat. “You mentioned a paper you signed years ago.”

He glanced at the envelope I’d seen earlier, its corner slightly peeled.

“That was a bureaucratic thing,” he replied, the words slipping out like a rehearsed line.

My mind raced—was it a loan, a contract, a deed?

“Can you tell me what it was for?” I asked, leaning forward.
