I’m a twelve‑year‑old terrified that tomorrow’s surgery will erase the girl I’ve always been.

I’m a twelve‑year‑old terrified that tomorrow’s surgery will erase the girl I’ve always been. Save

Edge of the Bed

Tomorrow might change my face forever. But what scares me most… is how my family will look at me after.

I sit on the edge of the hospital bed, the thin blanket pulling at my knees, and my hand trembles around the handmade sign that reads “I’m scared.”

“You’re doing great, Em,” Mara whispers, her fingertips brushing my shoulders. A hidden tear slides down her cheek, catching the fluorescent light.

She wipes it away quickly, as if hiding a secret. I can feel the heat of her palm, the steady beat of her heart against my back.

“I can’t stop touching my face,” I say, voice cracking, “just in case everything is different tomorrow.”

She squeezes a little tighter, the scent of antiseptic mixing with the faint perfume she always wears.

“We’ll still see the same Emma,” she murmurs, but the tremor in her voice betrays the fear.

I trace the letters on the sign, each stroke a reminder of the unknown. The room feels too quiet, the hum of the hallway machines the only sound filling the space.

My mind spins with images of a new face, of people staring, of a smile that might not belong to me.

Dr. Patel’s Explanation

The door opens and Dr. Patel steps in, his white coat crisp, eyes steady.

“Emma, the surgery will remove the malformed cartilage and reconstruct the facial structure,” he says bluntly, laying a glossy photo on the bedside table.

The photo shows a before‑and‑after of a teenage girl; the transformation is dramatic, the scar barely visible.

“You’ll have a smoother contour, less pain, and you’ll be able to eat normally,” he continues, flipping the page.

“Will I look… different?” I ask, my throat tight.

He pauses, then nods. “There will be some permanent changes. The left cheek will have a small scar, and the eye area may shift slightly.”

Mara’s hand clenches around the edge of the sheet, her knuckles white. She nods silently, anxiety spiking as the risk settles in her gut.

Just then the door swings open again. Lily darts in, a bag of my favorite chips and gummy bears spilling onto the floor.

“Hey, Em! Brought the emergency snack stash,” Lily grins, pulling a sticker off the bag that reads “Stay Strong!”

“Thanks,” I manage, a weak smile cracking through.

We chat, the clatter of snack wrappers mixing with the beeping monitors, trying to lift the mood.

Suddenly the lights flicker, a low hum rising from the ceiling.

The intercom crackles, and a sterile voice announces, “Code Red: Power outage. Operating theater locked down due to potential contamination breach.”

Arcade Escape

“You sure we can get away with this?” Lily whispered, tugging the door ajar.

I nodded, heart thudding like a drum in my chest.

The waiting‑room arcade was a relic: neon lights buzzing, a cracked carpet, a battered claw machine that still clinked when you tried to snag a plastic dinosaur.

I slipped the sign into my pocket, feeling its corners bite my palm.

“Okay, one try,” Lily said, handing me a handful of quarters.
