I wore Mom’s denim dress to prom, hoping for heartbreak, and discovered my stepmother’s secrets were finally exposed.

Morning Calls and Hidden Pockets

I stared at the phone screen, thumb hovering over Finn’s number.

“Hey,” I mumbled, “thanks for the dress. I can’t believe you pulled that off.”

His voice crackled, bright with pride. “Come over. I’m still polishing it in the garage studio.”

I slipped on my sneakers, the denim dress still draped over my arm like a banner.

The garage smelled of pine shavings and fresh paint; a small workbench was littered with ribbons, needles, and a tiny sewing machine that whirred softly.

Finn was hunched over a wooden stool, a rag in his hand, the fabric shimmering in the morning light.

“Look,” he said, tapping a seam hidden beneath the hem.

He lifted a discreet pocket, the stitching almost invisible.

Inside lay a folded check, crisp and stark against the denim.

The name “Danica” stared back from the top, the amount $26,000 bolded in ink.

There was no signature, no date—just the promise of money we never saw.

I felt the weight of it settle in my chest, a secret finally surfacing.

“Why would she have that?” I asked, voice low.

Finn’s eyes flicked to the floor, then back up, determined.

“Because she stole it,” he whispered, “and Mom’s dresses keep telling the truth.”

Confrontation in the Kitchen

Later that day I found Danica at the kitchen island, phone in one hand, a steaming mug in the other.

“We need to talk,” I said, pushing the check across the marble.

She glanced at the paper, eyebrows knitting.

“I was just holding it for you,” she said, voice tight, “until you were ready.”

Her fingers trembled as she lifted the edge, the ink catching the light.

“Holding it?” I echoed, heart hammering. “You’ve been living off Mom’s money for months.”

She swallowed, eyes darting to the window where the sun painted the curtains gold.

“I didn’t know—” she started, but the check lay like a verdict between us.

Danica’s face drained; the color fled from her cheeks, leaving a ghostly pallor.

She pressed a hand to her throat, a gasp caught in her throat.

Suddenly, the front door burst open, a flash of red and blue spilling onto the porch.

Police sirens roared, echoing through the house, as two officers stepped inside, guns lowered but eyes sharp.
