I Watched My Wife’s Midnight Visitor and Realized My Daughter Was Seeing the Truth I Refused to See

I Watched My Wife’s Midnight Visitor and Realized My Daughter Was Seeing the Truth I Refused to See Save

Homecoming

— You're back already? My wife’s voice floated from the kitchen, too bright for the gray light spilling through the window.

She turned, hair tied back, smile plastered, but the dark rings under her eyes told a different story.

She lifted a mug, steam curling like a sigh, and I watched the way she flinched when the spoon clinked against porcelain.

Sonia sat at the table, legs tucked beneath her, pink backpack clutched like a lifeline.

She didn’t look up. Her eyes stared at the floor, as if the tiles held secret messages.

— How was work? I asked, trying to sound casual.

She forced a laugh, the sound thin, and tucked her sleeves tighter—long sleeves on a summer day.

“Fine,” she said, but her voice trembled just enough that I heard the crack in the floorboards before I saw it.

She brushed a stray hair from her face, and for a moment the space between us seemed to thicken, as if the house itself were holding its breath.

I set my keys down, the metal jangling louder than usual, and caught a glimpse of Sonia’s hand tightening around the strap of her backpack.

Midnight Watch

I slipped under the covers, eyes on the ceiling, heart beating a slow rhythm.

“Just pretend you’re asleep,” I whispered to myself, the words swallowed by the darkness.

The mattress creaked as I shifted, feeling the floor vibrate faintly, a low hum that seemed to rise from the walls.

Then a shadow slipped across the hallway, a man in a dark coat, moving with the deliberate caution of someone who didn’t want the floor to announce his presence.

He paused at the doorway, his shoulders hunched, the coat swallowing his form.

He stepped into the room, the air chilling the space between the bed and the nightstand.

He stood at the foot of the bed, silent, eyes fixed on the small shape curled beneath the blanket.

Sonia gasped, the sound a tiny crack in the night, and clutched the blanket tighter.

The room seemed to freeze, the darkness holding its breath as the figure turned slowly, eyes locking onto Sonia.

The Morning After

“Did you hear that?” I asked, voice low, as I shook the cold coffee from my mug.

She blinked, the dark circles under her eyes deepening, and set the cup down with a trembling hand.

“What?” she said, the words catching on her throat, the kitchen light catching the dust in the air.

“Last night… the man. He was standing at Sonia’s foot.” My heart hammered, each syllable a knife.

She stared at the floor, her fingers tracing the rim of the table, as if searching for a hidden scar.
